Just off the phone with Shifty
« on: February 07, 2007, 12:52:50 PM »
He wanted me to pass on how grateful the family is for the support and says he'll try and reply to the PMs and e-mails when he gets a chance.  As you can imagine the world is a bit crazy for the family right now.

Just some background as I didn't realize this.  Both Shifty's sons did tours in Iraq previously.  His oldest son Travis was with the 4th ID.  Thomas was wounded on his previous 14 month tour as well.  Shifty said he didn't sleep much when both his boys were over there together.  I can't even begin to imagine what that must have been like.

Shifty mentioned that Thomas was wounded the first time on the day his brother Travis returned home from Iraq and Thomas was wounded the second time on Travis's birthday.

Shifty also said that he was able to talk to Thomas for about a minute as they had him off the respirator and that he sounded weak and in a lot of pain.

Shifty commented that Thomas is actually a tanker, but they were sent on their first tour without their tanks and he did 14 months of foot patrols.

This time they took the tanks, but because of his previous experience on foot, Thomas was sent out doing the same thing again.

Continued prayers and karma for Shifty and family.

I'd like to offer my thanks to Thomas for his service.  Not all of us in the US like the mission he was sent on, but we should all be grateful for his service on our behalf.

I wish him the best possible outcome.
