Successful BnZ attack
« on: January 31, 2007, 10:40:30 AM »
This afternoon, I had a series of great fights in the Late War Arena with a coulple of good pilots. This is one of the fights and i thought id share it, as I think it shows how a well flown BnZ attack can put much pressure on the defender.

On the first pass, I have to admit to a serious lack of SA on my part.... I had simply missed that P51 coming in on me. Later, im trying to find the mix between good guns defense and E building on my part.... not always successfully. Raza is very good at judging my evasives and estimating where I will be once he gets in guns range. He also keeps his advantage all throughout the fight, without letting himself be suckered into turning with my much nimbler plane. Eventually I fall to his advantage and good BnZ tactics.

HMk1 vs P51 (900 KB)

and thanks again for the fun fight there Raza!

shows a nice job of converting from what I'd call "B&Z" to true E fighting. No real extensions....he generally stayed inside 1.5, kept his speed managable and never chased a shot to the point he let you in the fight. Couple things might help those learning is noting Raza had dialed down to roughly 275 then actually acclerated a bit thru the 1st shot to 300. Most folks are to fast early. 2nd you can here him come off the gas just after the 1st pass....again establishing a correct spread in relative speed...this allowed him to maintain "contact" most of the time the extension after the 1st pass is much to long...

Successful? yea it was that..For him... You held him off longer in a normally aspirated plane than I would have.:aok

But really that was a slaughter.  The Hurri I being no match for the E the Alt and the faster PonyD.
I woulda been asking myself.. "self... How did you get yourself into this mess!!!" :lol

Any aggressive maneuver you make in that or the spit I almost always craps the engine, leaving you slower and  more vulnerable.

Was a GF .. I enjoyed lookin at it again from Raza's perspective.

Schatzi... You are a GREAT trainer.. keep up the good work:aok :aok :aok

I can tell you how i got in that "mess".... I asked him for the fight :). This was a series of set up fights with JanneK and Raza... we were calling out positions on 200.... As for it being "slaughter" - thats the reason I posted this film. I could post a few more where the Pony coming in with the same alt advantage dies. It was a really well flown fight from Raza, he played his planes advantages and my weaknesses well. Note as in one of his passes he uses ROLL to track me to make up for his slower turn rate.

Any aggressive maneuver you make in that or the spit I almost always craps the engine, leaving you slower and  more vulnerable.

Actually, the one time my engine cut out was my fault.... I thought i could get a ping on him as he overshot and held nose down for a split second. Otherwise, once youre used to the carburated engine, its not really that much of an issue. The low engine performance and his advantage at start definitly were though. He controlled the fight, never succumbing into playing "my game"... hed have lost if he did.

Schatzi well flown.
My question is why not  not turn into him sooner?
I usually turn into him much sooner to complicate enemy gun solution.
Higher closure rate  complicate things better than giving him your 6.

Thats what i meant when I said "mix between good guns defense and E building"... if I turn into him too early, hell break off his attack and zoom back up. What im trying to do is lure him into thinking hell get me so he actually follows me down in the turn so I can reverse him and gain some E on him. The difficulty being that you then have to judge his lead correctly and stay out of his sight just barely. With a good opponent as Raza, its a tight line.

Generally, i try to make the breakturn as wide as possible to help reducing the opponents E advantage.

Schatzi,

Thanks for all the time and effort you put into training.  Viewing film should be a good learning tool but, for me, it is not.  Perhaps you, or someone else, can tell me what I'm doing wrong.

I select external views, use recorded views, trails, and icons as I have seen recommended in several posts.  What I see is usually very hard to follow.  In watching the film of you and Raza, for example, I see only your plane (with no icon) much of the time.  His plane (with icon) moves in and out of the views.  The "camera" angle shifts constantly so I'm not sure what your relative positions are much of the time.  Sometimes the viewis from the side and then from below and then from a different angle.  Is there no view that is from one external position that doesn't change so the movements of both planes and their relative positions can be seen at the same time throughout the film?  According to the help file that's how the fixed view is suposed to work but I find the views jump all over using the fixed view also.

Internal, external, chase, or fixed views can be combined with bombsite, snap, pan, instant, or padlock.  Pan seems to result in the least jumping around of the point of view although the help file suggests they control how the views change when you use yhe keypad which I don't.  Do they only come into play when the keypad is used?

I find zooming all the way out with the distance zoom gives a broader view of the action but in this case it did not include both planes much of the time and the point of view still jumped around so much I found it hard to follw what was happening.

I get the impression from this thread that others were able to follow the action in the film just fine.

I must be doing something wrong when I use the viewer but don't know what.  I don't find it to be much like watching a film.  Is this like SA in the arena requiring you to determine whats going on from constantly shifting views?

Am I the only one who has trouble with this?  Any advice on how to get more out of the films will be appreciated.

Thanks
Balrog in game. Some day my performance may justify the name. LOL

Condor,

its not really something you do wrong. Im just rewatching the film and I can see where you have problems.

Make sure you have "Trails" checked, as that gives you a much better idea of the flight paths of the planes.
From external view" and with "recorded views" checked, youll get the view direction i was actually looing to and the plane from a position about 60 yards away from it (ie when I looked up in the fight, youll see the belly of my plane).

Watching the film, in the first 38 seconds I had no idea that Raza was already in the area... i was looking around, searching for his dot... blatant lack of SA there :o.

Later, I switch from looking at his plane to my own instruments/flight path. Im not always looking at him, but I know where he is.
Also, I keep scanning the area for possible other bandits coming in... it was the MA after all. About a minute into the film, im "ignoring" him for a while.... that was when i was typing the "sneaky" comment on chat.

My views in that film are not exemplary... its very hectic and seems unfocused at times. I sometimes only get a flash view at the pony... a split second to check the position and distance... enough for me to know what hes doing.

You can uncheck the "recorded views" and track the bandit yourself in the viewer, with numpad (turn of NUM lock to avoid Win going nuts beeping) or your Joysticks hatswitch. TIR does not work in the viewer tho.

You can try viewing the film in Internal view first... this will help you get a feel for the view directions better. You can adjust the head positions same as in game for better visibility. Or by checking the "guncam" box, you can make the plane invisible.

If you are using the "fixed view" to watch a film, uncheck the "recorded views" option... then you get an outside POV of the fight. Again, make sure you got the "trails" option checked.

Generally, just play around with the viewer... find a set that works best for you. Also, some films are better watched this way or the other....

Edit: just found a very interesting set for this film. After opening it check the external view, then hit F11 (that will set you in padlock view). Select the Pony with TAB (you get a box around the icon). Check only the Trails and Icon options, no recorded views!. The padlock now tracks the Pony through the fight.

Padlock seems to be loosing track of target at times though.

I guess operating  views yourself (numpad) and fixed view (use the sliders to keep pony in sight) are you best bets.
