Look what happened about 6 miles from where I live. Local freight train derailed early saturday morning. Its still a mess there coming home from work today

Just be thankful those tank cars didn't rupture. All kinds of hell could have broken loose.

And they are definitely luck those tanks didnt rupture.

A few years ago (1989) a train derailed coming down a mountain pass into San Bernardino. It was carrying borax from the desert I think, which caused the evacuation of a few square blocks of homes. While they were lifting a car later, an underground gas main 30" in diameter which had been damaged in the derailment burst and about 4 square blocks of homes were destroyed by the fire. If they hadn't been evacuated it would have been a huge disaster.

I saw a documentary on that. If I remember correctly, it was a clerical error that caused the train to be overloaded and it couldn't slow down coming down the pass. A good example of the butterfly effect.

Thanks for the link. I forwarded it on to my Sister, she works for NS.

She says there is so little wiggle room in those car carriers that if one of them derails, even without going on its side, the cars inside get trashed because they bounce off of the sides.

i thought the cars were chained down, they are on the semi-trailer car carriers.

The past few days, there has been a flatbed picking up the automobiles one by one. Apparently some arent that bad of shape because I seen some of them being driven around
