Hehehe,
Yea I was there. I was illumination flares at the Air Force bombing range just over the South Mountain range that night that people saw from Phoenix. Was finally confirmed that an AF Guard unit was flying training missions that night, so the regular AF didn't have any immediate knowledge of what was going on. Led to all kinds of speculation. If any of the Ex-military guys would have saw it, the'd have recognized it immediatly, just as I did. Also, there were reports of a "triangle" of lights flying over downtown about an hour previously. I remember a group of 3 WWII aircraft were flying formation into Williams AFB that night to do an Air Show that weekend. Williams AFB is a de-commisioned base in the SE corner of the Phoenix metro area, and I believe the flight was comming from Vas Vegas to attend the show. I also believe someone finally dug up the original filed flight plan for the WWII aircraft, but it was buried, as usual, under all the hype.
