CPU or graphic card???
« on: October 08, 2001, 10:00:00 AM »
Hi folks....

Whats better for a 600mhz Athlon with 256Mb Ram and a TNT2 card...

Upgrade to a geforce II or upgrade processor???

I usually get between 24 and 35 fps (24 on ground, 35 at 10.000+Alt)

Thanks for advices!

You are pretty processor bound.  With that processor, you may not get much more with a faster video card.
It takes about an 800Mhz or faster CPU to get the benefits of a GF2 Ultra/GF2 GTS Pro/ATI Radeon, for instance.  933Mhz or faster will push those video cards to the limits, in most cases.

Hope that helps.

JV44,

You really aren't going to like this but upgrading either one will leave you with a bottle neck.

If you upgrade the processor your video card is going to hold it back.  On the other hand if you upgrade the video card your cpu won't be able to feed it very well.

As for if you can only do one or the other I would upgrade the video card.  That way at least all the data transfer by the cpu to the video card will be used.  If you upgrade the cpu, all the data that it processes will be blocked by your video card and you won't see much if any improvement.
