There's a few oldies but goodies that bring back memories. I have to agree, many of todays games, although much prettier graphics, and lacking in game play at times.
Always thought a WC/Privateer MMOG would be a good idea.... add avatar movement like SWG, and maybe a little ground combat.
Was sorry to see the last Privateer edition get canceled in production. I was looking forward to that.
Elite. Frontier Elite II, and First Encounters.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crusader_(computer_game)Destroyer Command.... yes...buggy, they never did get it right....but I liked the DD side more than the Silent Service side, and I got mine to run fairly stable.
Sim Earth
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SimEarthhad lot's of fun "terraforming" Mars with this game. I'm VERY surprised with all the Global Warming debates that this game has not been redone. Especially with the computing, memory, and storage power available today.
Edit:
Activision's "Interstate '76"

Interplay's "Fallout" series
Activision's problem plagued "Starfleet Command" series
"Cutthroats! Terror on the High Seas" from EIDOS and Hothouse. Classic!
Honorable mention:
Battlecruiser3000 --- never played it. Just watching the endless ongoing train wreck of this game development over the years has been entertaining.
