Upgrading from Radeon 9800
« on: February 16, 2007, 04:01:15 PM »
Anybody have a good idea want kind of FR improvement I would get if I upgrade to a x1300 or x1600?    My FRs are generally in the 70s now.

Really I'd like to be able to play at max texture size of 1024.   My 9800 only has 128Mb on it - if I get a 256Mb or 512Mb card will it fix those annoying 1/2 second screen freezes?   I don't get them if I play with 512 textures.

I run a 2.8 P4 oc'd to 3.06, Win XP Home, with 1024 RAM.

The x1600 is what I have now.

It has given me a considerable boost to my fps.   Got all the sliders maxed to the left now!

Although I'm runnin an AMD dual core at 4200

BUT!

You still need FSautostart if you don't want stutters mini freezes, etc.

Also make sure you turn OFF other plane skins and DON'T preload skins either!

Might wanna look at the ATI X1950 AGP.  NOT sure but hear it is even better?
It's been said we have three brains, one cobbled on top of the next. The stem is first, the reptilian brain; then the mammalian cerebellum; finally the over developed cerebral cortex.  They don't work together in awfully good harmony - hence ax murders, mobs, and socialism.

one thing to check is Sound .... I had to turn off my ck6 call sound in AH because it froze me everytime ... and always happened when i was going for the shot .

Turn down your sound excelleration in windows one notch may help .

other thing is how much system ram do you have ??

I run a 2.4 ghz w/ 1 gig ram , and a 9600 pro .. I dont get any freezes after i adj my sound .   i run High res 1024 tex ... nothing preloaded.  I do have skins on .. they will cause a freeze if you dont have them all dled .

Oh, this is an older thread but I missed it. Avoid the x1300. It's an economy card, not meant for higher performance, I believe.

Either go x800 or jump to x1600, don't do anything in between.

hardtack, you mentioned you have an ATI 9800, but is this a 9800, 9800SE, or a 9800 Pro?   does this card require its on power plug/source at the end of the card?

I use a 9800 Pro 128 meg card, it will do as Roscorro mentioned,  with a frame rate on my machine around 47 to 55......

I fly with settings of 512 meg and 1024 x768 screen res so my fps stays pegged out to what my LCD monitor will allow.usually 75/74 fps steady......I preload plane cache/textures as well with no problems...

newegg has a sell on the Saphire  X1950XT Ati 512 meg GDDR3  AGP card for $229.99 and some change if you are looking.......

my pc is an Athlon XP2800+ ( not OC'ed) ati9800pro 128 meg vid card, 1 gig ram,  WinXP pro SP2,  (2) 160 gig Hd's SATA  running in RAID 1 setup )....on ASUS A7N8X-E  Deluxe MB.......

edit: oops....yep Krusty, this thread is a few months old, oh well

<-- pours water over TC ... :D

um heres a screenie i did with the ram ussage performance/ slider adjustment

If your getting close to maxing your ram amount out when the stutters a cure ...then you need to move your slider down alittle too . ... this also helps when tuning for the Big maps like Karella .
