Can't hit the ground with bombs
« on: February 20, 2007, 09:19:06 AM »
Been trying to buff lately, and I just plain suck.I've read all of the bombimg post time and time again, and I'm simply missing something literally!Rod's statement about having a new guy hitting targets from 30k in about five minutes of training doesn't apply to me.I calibrate by looking straight down, not forward, and it seems I hold the mark steady.I have the doors open way out from target, and I try to keep speed steady.I always miss, long or short by a wee bit.
It has occurred to me that since bombing has changed a few times over the years, that maybe some of the post aren't up to date?
I like flying a buff now and then to give my AH experince a change, but always missing isn't much fun,so I quickly jump back into a fighter, something that I can have a lil more fun in.Thanks for any help in advance.

Make sure your calibrated speed is the same as your e6b speed, well with in 1 or 2 MPH. Yes you do not need to do that look forward thing just calibrate in your bomb site and get speed and ALT as close as you can. Then DONT change  speed or alt if you do recalibrate. If your speed is a little faster than your e6b drop a little short depending on your differance in speed, but 1 or 2 MPH dont make much differance unless you are at 40K.  Remember calibrated speed and e6b must match along with ALT.

You can stay in bomb site and use the 8 key on key pad to look forward. You can also move around to get best view and f10 to save head position for your unobstructed view in bomb site.

Hope this helps.

The Trainer's site has a good write up.

http://trainers.hitechcreations.com/

Simple Checklist.

* Pick plane and fuel & bomb load for the target you want to hit.
- 500 lbs good for strat targets and buildings
- 1000 lbs good for hangars

* 25% to 50% fuel usually enough for a run.

* Climb to altitude under full power.  Be sure to raise flaps before, or shortly after you take off (depends on plane and what's beyond the runway).

* Once you are at your bombing altitude, or 25 miles out from target.  Level, line up on target best you can from map.

* X is autolevel.  You want autolevel, and when possible, combat trim.

* Reduce your MAN (Manifold) (aka throttle to some)  to a speed that will level out your altitude.  35 to 40 MAN in B-17's and B-24's work.  MAN setting is somewhat dependent on altitude, so this you will have to work out on your own with experimentation.  Bombers running at full throttle on a run with early calibration, tend to climb in altitude, even if on autolevel, which results in the drop landing long.  I try to be level and even speed 25 miles out.

* Check in you bombsite with early calibration, bomb bay doors open.  What you want is very little difference in your drop speed and altitude as compared to your current speed and altitude.  Some use the ESB to help them with this, but with time, you should get a technique down that allows you to just use the bomb sight.

* F6 to enter bombsight view.  U to enter calibration mode.  Y to calibrate the bombsite.  U to exit bombsite view.

* Use J and L for minor course corrections.  "Turret turn" (use of rudder controls -- if you have a joystick with rudder ability -- turn while in a gunner position and in external view) is more stable for major turns that joystick from cockpit.

* any major direction change, altitude change, or MAN change, will throw off the calibration of your bombsite.  Calibrate early, often, and for a long time if possible.  Check those speed and altitude numbers.

Bombing in game is very accurate if done with some forethought and patience.  I use 500 lb bombs on strats from 25 to 30K, single salvo, long calibrations, with about 90% accuracy.  That translates into loitering at sub orbital altitudes over a small airfield and completely de-strating (dar, ord, troops, fuel) it with 3 - B-17's loaded with 50% fuel and 12-500 lb bombs.

I go for strats since they stay down longer unless resupplied.  Hangars 15 minutes down time not a factor unless you are also capping and capturing a field.  I also like to take out those fuel bunkers to try and force pilots out of short-legged aircraft.  "I'm not happy unless your not happy"

Make sure your using the salvo command.  Its DOT SALVO X (ie .salvo 2)
You may not be dropping enought to take your target down.

Cheers
Forgot who said this while trying to take a base, but the quote goes like this. "I cant help you with ack, Im not in attack mode" This is with only 2 ack up in the town while troops were there, waiting. The rest of the town was down.

i've never really taken the time to climb to 25k, as i fly JU88's...normally i drop from between 10k and 18k, depending on alt of bad guys(for some ungodly reason they keep shooting at me). my normal procedure is to be lined up with my target at the radar ring. i go level there, and open bay doors, then start my calibrations. while i'm calibrating, i actually go to the F3 view intermittantly to check for nmy, and to be sure i have the right orientation on my target. i also double check my salvo and delay settings as well as making sure i have the right bombs selected for the particular target. as soon as the target is visible in my bombsite, i will start to zoom in my view too..use the } and { keys to zoom in and out. if i manage everything right, i can drop VH, all FH, and dar at a minimum on a small or medium field.
i flew Lancasters for the first time last weekend, and am amazed that anyone does.....they climb sooooooo slow...although they're pretty fast when ya get to alt.

one final note....if you do fly ju88's they need more fuel than the B-17's......
