FNG, video probs, monster fusion
« on: June 27, 2000, 09:15:00 AM »
I am new to AH and have downloaded the newest version and patch3.My video SUX!!
I have a amd-233k6 3d with 160megs sdram and a monster fusion vid card.I did the video download and have tried all the different configurations that were given to me from the video section at the beginning of the game. The thing is that the options that the video section gives me, doesn't give me anything except the primary display driver. What am I missing here. Do I just have an old video card that is incompatible or what??
please help

Gibbey,

Can you be a little more specific other than the video sux?  What exactly is the problem?  Low frame rate, tearing what?  You say you "did the video download".  Do you mean you downloaded and installed the hires patch?  How much video ram does your monster fusion card have?

Hi gibbey,
I am afraid that details probably wont help here. Your AMD K6 233 is almost certainly the problem, its just not enough horsepower to run the game well. WRT your video card the Monster Fusion is based on the Voodoo Banshee chipset and is a 2D/3D card and will show only a primary display driver in setup. You only see a separate option if you have a dedicated 3d only accelerator like Voodoo 1 or Voodoo 2 cards.
With some more CPU behind it this card would probably give you resonable framerates but is fillrate limited fairly quickly on a powerful machine. In short, to enjoy AH with playable video performance you need a new box Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but there has never been a better time to upgrade as some extremely powerful boxes can be built faily cheaply if you shop smart and are willing to build it yourself There are many folks here who might help you decide once you have your budget worked out.

First of all Primary display driver is the proper setting that you want.  Next comes the bad news.  The AMD k6, k62, and even k63 will never perform very well with AH due to their lethargic floating point units.  (AH makes extensive use of FP operations.)  Luckly (for AMD) they corrected this issue and installed an amazing FPU on their new Athlon chips.

"Not enough horsepower".??? I've got an OLD P-200 with 32 megs SDRAM and a 3DFX banshee; I get about 21-35 FPS on a nice day. Clouds show up and it dumps to 14 or so. I can blow up anything [even an HQ in 1.03-P3] with squat for FPS drop. Kinda nice for an old rust-bucket
