I tried to private message you, but your inbox is full.  It does not matter, this is not a particularly private subject.

What is your relation to Corey C. Jordan?  Is that you, or are you two friends?  And is not Mr. Jordan the son-in-law of Warren Bodie?

I emptied the PM box...

I'm C.C. Jordan. I co-wrote with Warren for a few years after Jeff died in the P-38 wreck. However, I'm not his son-in-law. I did steal my handle from Warren's publishing company.

I like your site too WW. I can't wait till Chapter 4 of the Grumman story, the F4F, is posted. :D

I'd like to know why the Navy seemed to be up-to-snuff with drop tanks at the beginning of WWII while the Air Corps seemed determined to ignore them.

BTW, weren't you an S-2 driver?

Best regards

I was a flying crew chief in the US-2B (utility version of the S-2) and the C-1A and HU-16. I qualified as a Flight Engineer in the C-118 and C-131.

I was shocked when I heard Jeff Etchells(Am I spelling that right) was killed in an aviation accident.   When I heard it was a P-38, I wondered if it was the one that was restored here in Medford,OR. by the Erickson Aviation guys, well they donated the hanger I think and mostly retired mechanics worked on it.   I used to go every few weeks and see it.    I heard that it was completely destroyed in an accident not long after it was completed. Anyway I heard about each a few months apart, was just wondering if the two tragedies were one in the same? It was many of Jeff's shows that got me interested in older war birds.
I apologize for the hijack

Yes, Jeff Ethell was killed in Bruce Pruett's P-38 that Erickson Sky Crane restored. There were two planes, Erickson restored both of them, the other is in the Tillamook Museum, and is painted in the colors of Jeff Ethell's father's P-38, Tangerine. Pruett gave Erickson the second plane in exchange for the restoration of the first.

By the way, two of the older Roaring Glory films which are not available from Amazon are available on DVD at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo in Michegan.  I had not known of their existence in DVD format.  They are the P-51 and P-40 volumes, with Jeff Ethell hosting.

WW.

R6Ds...The squadron I was with once made a deployment and we were transported in a C-118, R6D. It pulled up in front of the hanger with a 20 foot streak of black oil on the starboard side of the fuselage. So we knew it had oil in the reservoir before take off. We just weren't sure if it was the last take off or the one before that though, lol.

Best regards.

Yeah, the R2800s often leaked more oil than they burned.

Circa 1976, we were flying a load to dependents from Gitmo to Rosy Roads (the nearest full-service Navy dental clinic) in a C-118. Probably had 50 people aboard. I was still training and flying as the "2nd Mech". The flight engineer was a grizzled ADR1 named Tewey. He left the cockpit to get some coffee and I took over the engineer's seat. As he walked down the isle, a woman grabbed his sleeve.

'Excuse me, but what is that black stuff all over the wing?"

"That's oil ma'am", replied Tewey.

"Is that normal?", asked the nervous lady.

"Well Ma'am, you let me know if it stops leaking."

"Why, does that mean you stopped it?" she asked. wide-eyed.

"No Ma'am, it'll mean that we're out of oil."

Gospel truth....
