Gosh, I came to the same conclusion as the DOT about NOT upgrading to VISTA and IE7,using the same logic, months before they released their own internal memo.

In a memo to his staff, the DOT's CIO Daniel Mintz says he has placed "an indefinite moratorium" on the upgrades as "there appears to be no compelling technical or business case for upgrading to these new Microsoft software products. Furthermore, there appears to be specific reasons not to upgrade."

The DOT's ban on Vista, Internet Explorer 7, and Office 2007 applies to 15,000 computer users at DOT proper who are currently running the Windows XP Professional operating system. The memo indicates that a similar ban is in effect at the Federal Aviation Administration, which has 45,000 desktop users.

Ok, the world is going to end. Let me get this straight. Our government is actually doing something right, as it pertains to the use and implementation of computers?

That's just scary. They were always such a model of ineptitude.

In the overall scheme of things though, it is just a scratch on the surface. The OEM's have to sell it, which is where MS's bread gets buttered anyways.

The military does the same thing with each new windows version, because it can take over a year to certify new versions of windows on military networks. The only approved version on some networks is still win2k, and guess what, it works just fine.

We did finally go to winXP on unclassified desktops but I don't see vista being approved anytime soon.

I suspect that an army of lawyers with suitcases full of gifts and campaign money will soon descend on Congress to force Mr. Daniel Mintz to either spend money on Vista, or find a new job. The product is irrelevant to politicians.

Could be if -95 would have been a stable platform. Unfortunately it's not. W2k was the first truly working business OS.

Nothing new here. My wife works for govt dept in Scotland and they were told "don't be gettting any fancy ideas about Vista. It just isn't happening. Took 5 years for them to migrate to XP from2000.

Skuz is right. Every box shifter home PC will ship with Vista from now on.

somehow I think you get my point though LOL

For what most offices need computers for. word processing, spreadsheet, Form filling, record keeping.
they simply dont need the latest greatest machine with the latest OS with all the fancy doodads and capabilities

In fact having the latest and greatest can be counterproductive in a work environment as is evidenced by how many companies complain about hours lost due to websurfing on company time and the like.
