Well.  It seems the moose isn't the only one who loses his ability to rationalize.  Apparantly, pilot's lose that vital ability when being run down by a moose.  What did he think?  The moose could actually run through the aircraft?  lmao.
Sure he never thought the animal would actually collide with the airplane, but wouldnt it be common sense and a natural reaction to say, Hey...theres a big fluff'n moose running full speed and he is only 10 feet away...maybe I should return to base!  or gain 10 more feet of altitude.

Moose sometimes charge when threatened; all Alaskans should know this.  The Alaska Railroad runs from Anchorage to Fairbanks and back everyday; I think its about 350 miles.  In the winter when the snow is deep the moose hang out on the RR tracks; they typically clobber a moose every run.  Sometimes they kill a few each run, especially when the snow is very deep.  Moose typically run away from the trains, but tend to run down the tracks where they know they can run fast.  They haven’t quite figured out that the trains aren’t really chasing them and can only move on the tracks.  Some moose react to the threat just as they do other threats, they charge the trains.  Moose are big, fast and strong, but they pretty much go splat when they head on a train.  The best part of all of this is that citizens can sign up to get on the railroad moose-kill list: you get a call that your moose is at mile 167.7 and you get a free dead moose.

I’ve only been charged once; I’ve been within 50 feet of moose probably a hundred times.

Saw the same thing happen with a water buff bull and a Bell 47 a few years back when I was working in the NT mustering water buff for the TB and brucilosis eradication programme.
Buff hooked horn on chopper's skid, dragged it outta the sky.
Buff was shot, chopper had damaged tail and main rotors, plexiglass bubble was trashed too.
Pilot was OK, but a tad shaken up about the whole thing, guy riding shotgun buttstroked himself in the face on impact with the ground, walked away with a broken nose and two black eyes.
Once it had been established that no one but the chopper and the buffalo were badly hurt, it was a pretty funny scene all up.
Kind of expensive funny scene though.
It did mean a week of sitting around getting drunk while we waited for chopper parts to arrive though
