Dumps to desktop are killing me!
« on: July 02, 2000, 09:24:00 PM »
I lost all sounds tonight after about 20 mins of flying, and twice while firing my cannons in my Typhoon, I was dumped to the desktop.

I am experiencing many DTD's now, mostly when pressing the "fly" button. But I've also be dumped when rolling down the runway. This is not a connection thing, either. This is a solid dump out of the game to my Win98 desktop, even while offline, or simply watching a film.

I have had absolutely NO problems until 1.03. Every previous version has run perfectly. And I don't have any problems with any oher apps or games on my PC.

PIII-733
Abit BE6-II
256 MB RAM
Guillemot Prophet 3D DDR-DVI GeForce (5.22 Drivers, the latest)
SB Live(3.0 Drivers)
CH Products Pro Throttle, Pro Pedals, Janes's Combatstick.
Win98FE
DX 7.0a
RW .54 beta
Flying in 1024x768 32-bit color

I'm at a total loss. I've done some checking on my end, and can't come up with anything wrong with my system. I even un-installed AH, then completely re-installed it.

When you combine the Dump-to-desktops, bumpy runways and loss of sounds, AH is almost unplayable for me. I'll do my best to be patient while you guys work on this.

Has this happened with all releases of 1.03?  Also, is the dump related to the loss of sound or do they occur independently?

For me Pyro , the sound has only this Verion last I think (1.033) but we didn't have the others very long to really tell IMO  . I seem to have to change the engine sound up and down more to to get the sound to right level .

At first I thought that was because of differant engine sounds I use , but the more it happens seems more like a bug "maybe" .

If I have to will change to stock sounds to see ?

NO dtd here now

gl with the fix  spro

Airspro, yep. I run my desktop at the same resolution and color depth as AH.

Pyro, to the best of my knowledge, I didn't get the dumps to desktop until the third patch. Or, if I was getting any in the previous versions of 1.03, I didn't notice them.

The dumps seem to be happening independently of the sound losses. So far, I've figured out two events that trigger them:

1. Pressing "fly" while in the tower or the hanger.

2. Firing cannons on the Typhoon.

OTOH, I've dumped while taxiing on the runway, and while trying to watch the film of the Hangtime/Hristo duel. It happens whether I'm online or off.

Hey Airspro, thanks for the tip on the new driver for the SB Live. I tried that yesterday, still no luck. Spent two hours yesterday trouble shooting and trying things:

Tried three different drivers for my Hercules Prophet 3D DDR-DVI(3.72, 3.77 and 5.22).

Re-installed Direct-X 7.0a

Installed the latest driver for the SB Live.

Tried running AH with and without triple buffering, and with and without Z buffering.

Tried every resolution and every color setting, making sure that my desktop settings matched.

Made sure I didn't have any extraneous apps running in the background.

My next step is to FDISK and FORMAT and start over from scratch, even though I do this regularly every six months anyway.

Since every version of AH worked perfectly with my system before 1.03, and since I'm pretty savy with PC hardware and operating systems, the only conclusion I can come up with is that either:

A) My system contains something that only AH is sensitive to.

B) There is a memory leak or something wrong with v 1.03 that doesn't allow it to work on my system.

If I knew that there was going to be a new patch released this week, I'd hold off on my re-build. But, with the tragic family crisis in HiTech's family, it could be awhile(understandably) until this is resolved. Therefore, I'm going to rebuild from scratch, just so I can be sure it's not something in my system that's causing the problem.

Thanks to all for your concern and helpfulness. <S>

airguard had to do a format C , he seems to think that did the trick

Oh ya , guard has a "ghost" program , is that the word for it ? Takes him less than two hours I think . U could write him , but I just bet that you already know about such things .

He wrote just above if you have not seen it yet .

Glad that the newer driver made no problems , not haveing any problems here since I started runing desktop res same as game .

Hope u get it going soon guy , fly high and shot stright . spro out

Dumpes to Desktop are very sporatic, But i have more problems with Screen Lockup. These are hard lockup and i need to kill the power to my system.

This all started with .103 and has continued with each patch!

Dog out.

PS. have gone back 3 versions on Herules TNT drivers looking for a cure, have reinstalled DX7.1a 2x now, last night i finally knock my hardware setting down a notch in Preformance settings. Will see if this works.

Dog out..........

Eureka!

Success at last. I just finished re-building my system from scratch, and it appears that AH works! No dumps to the desktop, and no bumpy runway!

I don't understand why a perfectly functioning system with all previous versions of AH needed to be re-built to work with 1.03, but that seemed to do the trick nevertheless.

The only thing I haven't installed yet is AKwabbit's sounds, but I don't think that'll be a problem.

Those of you still having similar problems, you may want to do what I did and FDISK and FORMAT. It's a pain in the keester, but it may solve your problem like it solved mine.
