IT question
« on: March 12, 2007, 04:53:03 PM »
OK, why does this not work?

One machine is a win2k3R2 with an IP of 192.168.0.153.  The other machine is on the same net at 192.168.0.98.  Sub mask is 255.255.255.0.

I can ping out anywhere from the server but nothing can ping it.

default route is accurate at 192.168.0.1 but that should not matter given they are are on the same subnet, the same switch for that matter.

Ideas?

Is the server configured to allow ICMP? Ping depends on that prototcol. People often turn it off as a security measure if the server is exposed to a possible exploit, attack, sniffer, etc.

Well... It was working fine and then I did a dcpromo to make it a secondary domain controller.  Once it rebooted it did not come up.   Today I erased the boot drive and rebuilt the machine since it was backed up anyway.  When the machine came back up it had the same problem which is kinda weird.    Maybe a routes issue?  should not be since they are on the same sub but I really don't get it.

If you promoted it to a SECONDARY dc I'm naturally assuming you have a primary dc? Can you ping that dc? I don't remember, but there may be something in the default domain controller group policy that disables ICMP, or if it's not default the group policy has been changed from default to disable it. The more I think about it, the more I recollect it is NOT disabled in the default policy. Anyway, try pinging the primary dc.

The machine can ping the DC and anyone else for that matter.. It makes sense that ICMP is disabled and I think that accounts for why Remote Desktop doesn't work too.  Any idea on how to enable it again manually?

Under the LAN adapter properties, tcpip, advanced, make sure tcp filtering has not been turned on.
