Microsoft is no longer providing updates to non-genuine versions of its Windows XP operating system. From today, the company has switched over to a full launch of its Windows Genuine Advantage Programme as part of its ongoing anti-piracy campaign.

Users will now have to join the WGA authentication program if they want to receive software updates from the Microsoft Download Centre or from Windows Update. However, MS says it will still provide security patches for pirated systems, which will be available via Automatic Updates in Windows.

LOL @ WGA. All WGA does is annoy legit users when it screws up. There are plenty of workarounds/patches for WGA.

Having said that I rarely patch unless it is critical. If I do patch its for a specific fix usually.

Oooh this is disconcerting stuff.  Put all my faith in Big Brother MS to keep my computers safe and current.  Don't wanna hear about problems (hands over ears, chanting lalalalalalalalalala).

Occasionally I get a security update that doesn't take for one reason or another.  Must have tried one 10 times or so, still doesn't take.  But computer still runs fine.

Whew.  :O

Apparently the problem here is caused by KB929338, which is said to cause some computers not to reboot. Some other problems also exist; failed to install the update, hibernation doesn't work after installing and can be fixed by uninstalling the update... etc. etc.

Luckily it fails to update my XP, which is the least of the problems.

A Nice reliability update huh? :huh

MS is making a mistake, but they are trying to take over the world one PC at a time so its no surprise to me.

I heard that MS will stop accepting new license activations for XP 1/2008. :noid

Some larger corporations have planned to start the evaluation process for vista around 10/07 so they'll have 2 months of time to 'evaluate' and then get fed the forcefeed hose down their throats.

I think this will hurt MS.

I'm sure someone managed to rip some premium content from hiberfil.sys at some point so they porked it for the time being by request of RIAA/MPAA. :noid

My copy of XP is legit, and it doesn't recognize it as such.

I backup an image of my drives on an external HDD that's only connected for the occasion, every two weeks.. and reinstalling XP is quick.
So all the bloated security this and that doesn't matter.  I stopped using it.
