Screen Freeze
« on: January 05, 2001, 07:27:00 PM »
I used to Red Out in earlier versions of AH. Now I have put in Directx 8.0 because with the 105 version of AH I was getting "screen freeze".
The only way out is to turn off and reboot. Some nights it happens 5 or 6 times in 10 sorties.  I have no problem in the offline game. The 8.0 hasnt helped.
It seems to happen after about 10 min in and frame rate is usually 45-48.  I can find no other common thread as to circumstance.
I have a Dell 700mg with 128 ram, navidia tnt 2,m64 4x agp video card, and TBS montego II gameport interface. It has become almost impossible to play with this happening so often.
ANYONE- HELP

It sounds like there is either some program running in the background causing problems, or you have some sort of a resource or driver problem.

Fist things first, what else is running when you play AH?  Scheduler or Virus scanner or something?  Check by hitting <CTR><ALT><DEL> and looking at the task list.  In an optimal setup, the ONLY things running when you play should be Explorer and Systray.  If you use a modem, I guess dial-up networking would add something else, but you get the idea.  To start with, you want to clean everything out of the system tray on the bottom right beside the clock.  The only thing you should see there is the volume applet (little speaker) and it won't cause you any trouble.  Kill everything else.  There may be some things running when you start your computer that you either don't know about or don't want.  You can get rid of these by going to the Start Menu, Choosing Run, and typing in "msconfig" and hitting OK.  In the Startup tab on the right you can see everything that is starting automatically on your computer, and disable the ones you do not want.  You should leave things like Scan Registry, TaskMon, and Systray, but get rid of things like "TimeSink Add client" or "Microsoft Office Startup".  It's best to uncheck one thing at a time, reboot, and make sure everything works ok.  If you killed something you need or want, you can just go back into msconfig and tick the box again and it will start next time.  I get rid of things like MSN Messenger from MS Config, and I just run messenger from the shortcut when I decide to, not all the time.

If you have something like a virus scanner running, you may want to leave it in automatic startup.  The best solution in that case is just to <CNTRL><ALT><DEL> and kill those tasks just before playing AH, then you can reboot your machine or manually start the program again after and still be protected.

If none of this helps, let me know and we'll talk about resource conflicts, drivers, and such.

Lephturn,
I wasnt sure if this is the way to respond to your suggestions, if you do not reply in couple of days I will try to get you some other way.  I tried to get you through the "flying pigs", didnt get you but enjoyed the site.
Thanks first of all for your reponse.  I tried several combinations of knocking things off the system tray, and used the ctr, alt, del to try different combinations that where on my system.
I had to leave on MSwheel, systray,AOL,explorer and rnaapp.
I knocked off mrtmnmgr, obdagent, and vtray, all at once and also one at a time, and the longest I was on before freeze was about 20 minutes, once with rnaapp off and once with a bunch off the task menu and the system tray.
I went into msconfig, but i was very nervous about hitting any of those things since I didnt know what they were.
Thanks again and if you want to email me, it is RPMCOOP@aol.com.
Thanks again for your help.

I've replied to your email as well.

I am not sure what is causing this yet, but I have a couple of suspicions.  Can you give more details on what kind of modem and connection you are using?  I suspect either a Winmodem or AOL at this point.

It could also be a video card issue.  Have you tried the very latest nVidia drivers for your video card?  I would give this a try also.

Make sure your video drivers support Direct X 8... I know the drivers for my card absolutely did not... and I believe don't don't believe there are any released det drivers that do.

I tried the freeing up the prog.s in startup and it added a little bit of framerate to my game...

Any other ideas to improve gaming???

As per Lephturn's suggestion, I have been knocking off the task bar on the lower right and going ctrl alt delete and knocking off the swtray, and am getting usually 45 min or so of the game before my first freeze.
After that on the reboot it is more varied as to time before the next freeze.
I was getting this before I put up directx 8.0, that is why I put it in.
It did not help this problem.
It appears to be system startup issues and or AOL.

I have the same problem with a similar sys.  I have a TNT 2 32 MB, Dell D333 with 128 MB, Montego II soundcard/gameport and DX-8.  The game freezes every ten mins or so.. Esp. when I change the views.
