Author Topic: 7900GS vs. 7600GS - Opinions? (Read 259 times)

I'm thinking about one or the other and leaning heavily towards the 7900GS 256MB. I'd be curious to hear from anyone using the 7900 and especially how much better it performs than the 7600GS 512MB. I'm not totally opposed to an ATI card so I'd be interested in opinions of their offerings in the same general performance/price range too. I'm just used to Nvidia cards. I'm not going to upgrade my PSU for the best thing out there either, It's plenty big enough to handle either of the above though. I have heard (rightly or wrongly) that there may be some heat issues with the 7900 due to a poorly performing fan. I'm not interested in doing any elaborate cooling mods either. Thanks.

The 7600GS is noticably slower and less capable than the 7800GS, let alone the 7900GS. Definitely go 7900GS if you're deciding between the two.

The memory doesn't really matter. If you have 256 and a fast chip, that's all you need. The common trend is to throw cheap memory onto an older card to make folks think it's better (because it has more RAM), but that doesn't make it crunch frames any better.

Thanks Krusty. I should have mentioned that I already have a 7600GS installed now on the machine in question but its a borrowed card. At least I already know what that one will do though before I commit.

I have a 7600GS with the 512MB RAM from PNY and I like havent had a problem yet since figured out why it wasnt running AH right.

Like I said, I'm already using a borrowed 7600GS, also PNY. I read the thread where you were having problems. I thought it strange because I configured this one with the default drivers and never had a problem despite all the back and forth over drivers for these cards. The card does seem to perform well all things considered.
