Looking to buy CHProducts Stick - which one?
« on: April 23, 2007, 07:23:13 PM »
I'm trying to figure out if I want to buy the Fighterstick (http://www.chproducts.com/retail/j_fighter_usb.html) or the Combatstick 568 (http://www.chproducts.com/retail/j_combat.html).

From what I can see, the Combatstick has more buttons, but is less expensive. I know the price increase for the Fighterstick is due to more programmable functions, 3 mode switching, and additional HAT switches.

Does anyone have either one and can tell me what your opinion is if you do own either?
Thanks.

*edit*
Ended up getting the Fighterstick. I need the additional HAT switches plus the different mode sets.

I have both...in both Gameport and USB versions. The gameport sticks still function perfectly, and have never given a bit of trouble after years of hard flight sim use, but they were replaced by the USB versions when I upgraded to WinXP from Win98 several years ago.

In both cases, the Combatsticks were purchased first...soley on the basis of price. However, I recommend going directly to the Fighterstick as it is definately the superior stick, and well worth the extra cost.

Physically, both stick's handles are identical in size and design...most likely they come out of the same mold.

Both have three axes.

The Combatstick has 18 programmable buttons - that includes the 8-way POV Hat, and one 4-way Hat.

The Fighterstick has 24 programmable buttons - including the 8-way POV Hat, and three 4-way Hats.

The real diference is in the greater number of programmable buttons/hats, and the inclusion of a mode selection button and 3 LEDs - Red/Green/Amber on the stick base to indicate the selected modes for each of the buttons on the Fighterstick.

The ability to program and select multiple modes means that each of the buttons can have multiple functions.

It has been my experience that in flight sims, the more HOTAS functions the better.

Yup to the above. I got the Fighterstick USB and love it. The more buttons the better when you have a complete HOTAS setup. I dont ever need to touch the keyboard for anything except typing messages.

CH Fighterstick USB
CH Pro Throttle USB
CH Pedals gameport on USB adapter.

I used to have a gameport combat stick (actually still have it), and i like the extra 2 4-ways that the fighterstick has.

I have the fighterstick, my only complaint with it, is that it's huge.  I modified with some foam and a tie wrap.

It is expensive but I will never buy a cheap stick again.  I also have pro pedals and I've had them for 5 years and they still work great.  good quality stuff

Yep!

I used pipe insulation and a beer cap to add thickness (and cool factor...)

I started with that. then I was looking at my daughter meesing around with some clay and had a better idea.
I went to the craft store and for something like $2 picked up a small block of black clay called "Sculpty"
Broke a chunk off and placed it on the handrest forming the general size shape and a little thicker then I wanted.
then put my hand on it like I was playing and moved the joystick around like I was flying and gradually made slight adjustments to the clay till it felt perfect to my hand.

Very gently slid a butter knife under it to gently peel it off without bending it.
Stick it (the clay) the oven at 275 for about 15 min. Then take out and let cool for 30 min (its still kinda soft and brittle till it cools.

When it is cool its very hard.
To attach it to the stick I used "Command strips"
The kind of stuff you see on TV you can use to hang something on a wall, then when you dont want it there anymor, you just pull the tab and they peel right off.
I used one of the ones that came in a package of cord clips.
In any event. Works like a charm.
I didnt want to glue it or do anything that might permanently alter the stick.

I tried those little geuey things you roll into a ball them mash down. But I found the clay would slide on it.
This hold it in place perfectly

And  if I want to make a change I can just peel it off

Not at all , now it looks like it would but really it's fine .

It's just a 1 1/2in metal bracket from the TrueValue store :)

I think it was 2 for a buck something or close to that hehe . The hose clamp I was gonna pretty that up but never have , it not in the way at all .
