Buff Missions vs Frame Rates
« on: March 28, 2007, 09:04:24 AM »
As with the other triple buffs need to be nixed posts this is yet another seperate topic.

Don't get me wrong here.  I like triple buff formations.  I like the extra guns when I'm in one and I like the extra targets when I'm not, but, I think formations should be disallowed in mission planning.

Any time there's a big buff mission near me, either friendly or enemy, my frame rates drop to typically 3-7 and I know I'm not the only one.  Mine have gone as low as 0 before.  The only thing you can do is clear the area.

You're not effective attacking or defending in this state.

The other night one of my countrymen, a famed mission planner, was calling for a "frame buster" on country channel.  I knew exactly what he meant.

I've been on one of these missions that he's planned.  We took out 2 fields with little to no opposition.  Why?  Because the enemy was afraid?  I don't think so.  I think they knew (or found out) they wouldn't be able to fly effectively against us and went elsewhere.

Last night I was in LW Blue.  I logged in because a squaddie was there (who was afk).  There was only one fight going on without having to fly several sectors to find a single guy who might run when you got there so that's where I flew.  Friendly bomber missions kept coming over killing frame rates.  Other countrymen were complaining about it on range radio.  This was the only real fight on the map and I couldn't fly there.

This has nothing to do with "you don't fly this way so you don't like it".  It's purely about something that negatively inpacts game performance for many.

With 10,15 or more bombers in a group do they really need drones?  If 2-3 guys are up in buffs together fine but do they really need  mission planning?  Most likely they are squaddies anyway.

Even if formations are disallowed people could just up independantly and effectively do the same thing but I think the prevalence of it would decrease.  Allowing formations in mission planning just makes it too easy.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

Same here. When hunting them, I have to pick at the stragglers, or else I'm firing blindly in a slideshow. No idea why, but large groups of formations usually destroy my framerates too.

Buy a better video card.
Forgot who said this while trying to take a base, but the quote goes like this. "I cant help you with ack, Im not in attack mode" This is with only 2 ack up in the town while troops were there, waiting. The rest of the town was down.

My old computer would do that, but the new one doesn't have any problems.

Dell XPS system
Windows XP Pro
2.13G Duo core Intel
4G RAM
2 256M SLI video cards GeForce 7900 GS

Frame rates typicaly in the high 190's to low 200's. Seen it as high as 320 in the EW arena when I'm just tooling around.

Hardware makes the differance.

I'm running a 3.2g NWood w/ 400mhz FSB
1gig PC3200 ram
GeForce 6800GT OC'd to 411 core 1100 ram

I used to run at max screen refresh rate and 4x AA. FPS wouldn't drop below 45 in any situation.

I think it was patch 2 of the current version when my performance took a nose dive.

Over tanktown or attacking large buff formations I now get as low as 12fps. That's with default detail and NO AA.

I was waiting for an optimization patch but it never came like in past updates.

I do wish that HTC would look at this since there are many other subscribers in the same situation.

Gonna have to turn down the settings.

As games progress, they will constantly push the limits of outdated equipment, it makes no sense to engineer backwards.  There are settings that can be reduced so that the weakest machines perform well, the eye candy is lost, but that's the tradeoff.

If you want the goodies And the performance, then you need the equipment.  Options are in the game, no ones excluded, but you have to chose your level.

I'm running an AMD 2700, Radeon 9700 pro and a gig memory.  I'm also running just under 3/4 on the detail pulling a constant 75/78 fps.  In a heavy fight, I drop to the high 40s.

About the only time I take a hit on frames is an event where we stuff about 100 bombers with formations into a flight of fighters.  That hurts, but that's also rare.

I also run Nothing at all while I fly, stripped clean.  There are Many ways your system is going to react badly to frame rates that may have nothing to do with the game settings.

Yep upgrade of hardware required. I have flown fighter cover for these missions and have no problems, but I do have a pc which is "quite meaty"
