AGP 4x Problems?
« on: January 12, 2001, 09:49:00 AM »
Is any one having problems using AGP 4x and running AH? I know this is kind of a generic question and is missing a bunch of details. Problem is, i have a asus P3V4X and a Geforce ULTRA card, everything runs flawlessly in AGP 2x but when i bump it up to 4x AH will lock up and i have to hard reboot the CPU. I can run AGP 4x on 3D mark with out any problems. I haven't tried any other games yet, but will soon. I just wanted to know if there were any known issues between AH and using AGP 4x??

thanks.

There shouldn't be Mason.  I used to run my V770 Ultra in 4x mode, but I didn't get any framerate increase as compared to 2x.  On top of that my system was slightly less stable.

Honestly AGP4x is kind of like ATA100; it sounds good, but no existing hardware can make use of it and show any significant performance increase.

Besides which a lot of video cards support AGPx4 but unfortunately a lot of motherboards dont, and unless they both do it will not work anyway.

I use a Viper 770 Ultra at 4x with the last drivers Diamond offers for them, 4.1.2.., and I also use DX8. It runs flawlessly on a Abit VH6 motherboard with the VIA Apollo chip set and a 933 PIII. I get 32 fps on ship deck in a fight and as much as 60 fps flying. I reccomend the 4X if the card and the board support it.

Mark, I have the same card, and use 4.02 diamond as well.  I'm using an Athlon Thunderbird 700, 128 mb pc 133, Dx7a, Asus a7v.  I tried it at Agp 2x and 4x; there was no real difference.

Either way I ran about 70 - 75 fps.  Overclocking the processor to 900 Mhz, agp4x, and upping the memory and video processor cpu clock barely made a diffence.  The system was MUCH less stable as well.  To top it off, my case temp went from 85F to 100F, and CPU temp from 42C to 55C.  To me, 1 or 2 fps is not worth burning up the CPU.  The truth is that todays computers just can't stress the AGP bus enough to really make use of the extra speed.

Currently I'm running at Agp 2x, and the Cpu at 808 mhz.

IMO anything above 45 fps or so isn't really noticable.

AGP 4X is porked Mason. Its not you, its a combination of a porked standard and Windows spewing.

I got a P3V4X and Geforce 2MX, tried it, read the readmes, found it sucked, got the patches to fix 98.
