PIII 500 & GeForce mx II
« on: January 13, 2001, 10:35:00 AM »
hello ppl
i have a couple questions for you tech ppl.
first if all i have a PIII 500 and i just got a new GeForce mx II with 32 meg ram. Problem is i cant tell any difference in performance with the 16 meg Nvidia card i had. What kind of fps should i be getting with this setup.

SYS SPECS
PIII 500
win98
Geforce mx II (Latest drivers from the webpage)
128 MEG RAM
13 GIG SCSI

Fps in the smoke drop to 5 or 6 still even with the new video card.

RWY out !!

AH doesn't do much in graphics past the level of a TNT2. Where a Geforce will help is in high resolutions like 1600x1200x32.

Don't worry though, there are a lot of games hitting the market with Hardware T&L Support (like Delta Force Landwarrior, IGI, etc) which really show off the 2MX.

Turn it up to 32 bit!  Trust me, 32 bit color is a BIG difference.

If you can't do higher resolutions due to monitor constraints, try turning on the FSAA options in your card's properties.

Robert, in my benchmarking I have found that with these high performance graphics cards, you really need a CPU that can get the data to them as fast as possible.
There is a vast performance increase when using an 800Mhz processor versus a 600Mhz processor, but only with high performance video cards.

For example, my old ATI Rage MAXX vide card was just fine with a 600E processor, as the video card became the bottleneck at resolutions over 1024x768x32.
But, with an ATI Radeon 64MB DDR card, I did not note a noticable difference in the performance until I swithec out the 600E for an 800E processor.  This change made a huge difference in the video performance.

Hope this helps.

guys im so damne dumb i cant even tell if i have the freakin fsaa on. i found a option for fsaa on the OpenGL BUT i cant find the option for the D3D stuff. One other thing. if i turn on the 32 bit graphics i cant play at all. looks like i need to take the card back and get a new processor.

P.S. PLEASE give me any idea you have for getting something more out of this without over clocking.
