U.N. can tell countries what to say now?
« on: March 29, 2007, 05:07:20 PM »
Does anyone else read this as though governments must have "Permission" to say what they want to  , to another country? I read it that way. Am I wrong?

UNITED NATIONS  —  After marathon negotiations, the U.N. Security Council agreed late Thursday afternoon on a watered-down press statement expressing "grave concern" at Iran's capture of 15 British sailors and marines and calling for an early resolution of the problem, including their release.

Primarily because of Russian opposition, Britain failed to win council support for a stronger statement that would "deplore" Iran's detention of the Britons and call for their immediate release.

A press statement is the weakest action the council can take, but the statement must be approved by all 15 council members. A presidential statement, unlike a press statement, also needs consensus but is read at a formal Security Council meeting and becomes part of its official record.

umm, that would be a statement issued by the UN Security Council, not a statement from the gov't of the UK. The UN is not "the world government". At least not yet.

If I were Iran, I'd be more wary of their special forces.

The U.N. is nothing more than a joke and an embarrassment. Nuff said.
Get the U.N. to hell out of the U.S.  )

Unfortunately, Lazs2 raises a valid point. 25 years ago, when we were still maintaining our military at cold war levels, we were barely able to muster enough of a force to kick Argentinian conscripts off the Falklands. We got very, very lucky in that conflict.

Lets just say that we couldn't mount the same operation now so I can't see the Iranians losing too much sleep over Tony's rhetoric.

Any chance of you Yanks sorting this out for us...

Lets not forget who the UK has as its greatest ally. The country with the most powerful military force on the face of the earth

And one that now owes the UK one at that

Hmmmm Now Im thinking. This couldnt have been by some master design could it?
That they had some Brits accidently on purpose wander over there to entice the Iranians to capture em to provide an excuse for a larger escalation?

that military force can't do anything when the democratic controlled congress cuts off their funding.

Think of the positive effect! Cutting and running from 2 conflicts simultaneously will be twice the legacy for the congress!
