AH’s Greatest Aircraft Needs Based on Production:
« Reply #15 on: April 01, 2007, 10:09:38 AM »
Before I stopped playing a year and a half ago we had a couple of contests in the MA (when there was only 1 big MA).  One contest was to see who could get the most kills in the P-40B.  The other was to get the most kills, with some convoluted formula, in the five worst fighters in available.  Both contests were a hoot and a great challenge.  I still owe Sirloin a Lazs-Lancaster Lazscaster skin for winning one of those.

Ki-27 Nate.....ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

Maximum speed: 444 km/h (275 mph) at altitude
Cruise speed: 350 km/h (218 mph)
Range: 630 km (390 mi)
Armament: 2x 7.7 mm Type 89 machine guns, 500 rounds/gun
Of course the the ki-27 would probably handle like an rv8 but with guns! but i don't think i'd like to get caught in a fight with it

Ki-43 on the other hand.....

Maximum speed: 530 km/h (329 mph) at 4,000 m (13,125 ft)
Range: 1,760 km (1,095 mi) combat; 3,200 km (1,990 mi) ferry
Service ceiling: 11,200 m (36,750 ft)
Rate of climb: 16.5 m/s (3,240 ft/min)
Guns: 2x 12.7-mm synchronized machine guns in the cowl with 250 rounds/gun (400 rpm rate each) or 1x 12.7 mm and 1x 7.7 mm machine gun.
Bombs: 2x 250 kg (550 lb) bombs

or with the IIIb version, instead of .50 cals 2x20mm Ho-5 cannons:D

Good list and good post Eskimo2.

I think, rather than voting HT should just build down the list.  Then Polikarpov IL-16 Type 24/28 I ask for so often would be built second :)
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

* Updated with missing planes as pointed out in above posts in Bold.
* My original source was written in 1977; I bought it as a kid.  It apparently had some missing information; especially Russian aircraft!

Production numbers are not a good yardstick to judge what is needed.

Gaps in the planeset are the way to look at it.

My grandfather flew the Swordfish in WW2 for the Fleet Air Arm and I would love to see it in the game however, it was used against merchant shipping (armed with torps) and enemy submarines (armed with depth ccharges) in an attack role and only as a spotter against Carrier groups. It's success against the Bismark can only be attributed to the Germans reliance on technology and not the endurance or build of the aircraft and it's other great success at Taranto was due to overwhelming numbers and the unreadiness of the Italian Fleet (basically the Pearl Harbor of Europe) It wouldn't last 5 seconds against a CV group in game and armed with only 2 .303 Brownings, one front facing aand 1 rear, it is hardly equipped to deal with anything but the crappiest of EW planes.

Yea,

I wouldn’t argue that this is the exact order that the next 30 or 40 planes should be modeled; but it certainly is a factor worthy of consideration.  It also illustrates where some major gaps lie; 75% of the major missing fighter aircraft, based on production numbers, were built or primarily used by the Russians.  As a kid there was very little information about Russian planes; to this day I still know 10 times as much about US and German planes as I do about Russian ones.  I’m also fairly weak on the less famous Japanese planes as well.  I would bet that most American players could say the same.  I think that many of us have a bias due to a shortage of information and Ben Affleck movies.

It also shows that something would wrong be wrong (from a historical perspective, not necessarily a game perspective) to build a plane like the C. 55 or Me 410 without first making an early Yak, I-16 and at least one heavy Russian bomber.  As much as I love the A-26 and B-25, I think it’s sad that the He 111 won’t make it past this round.  This is from my point of view; however, I flew in the CT where the JU-88 was just too uber for BOB scenarios and the He 111 would have been a beautiful fit.  Most players prefer the MA, where the 111 would be a baby seal with a kick-me sign taped to its back.  It’s understandable that most players won’t want it.

Karnak,

I know that you know this stuff better than anyone.  I’d love to see a list, in order, of what you think should be produced (excluding an extensive list of Mossie variants) :) .

Anyone else want to make a list; please go for it.
