One Shot One Kill?
« on: April 13, 2007, 03:01:13 PM »
It's pretty sad that a Sherman can kill a Tiger with one shot dead in the turret {Like it really could do in RL?!?}, but the Tiger can't kill a Sherman with one shot dead in the turret. I know this is an upgraded version of the Sherman, but STILL, I thought the Sherman wasn't that good anyway?

Yah;

I was messing around offline with some friends and had them take me on with their Shermans vs. my Tiger.

I got thumped on about a dozen times from about 2500 yrds with no effect from their 17lbers, while my 88 lit them up with one hull hit every time.  I finally lost when one snuck in less than 2k and lit me up from a left quarter shot.

Final score with Tiger defending and Shermans attacking from the front from about a 3k start?  14 Fireflies destroyed vs. the one lost Tiger.

If the 17lb gun gets close enough or gets a shot at weaker armor, it's certainly very potent.  At long ranges though, the 88mm and the incredible toughness of the Tiger's armor still dominates.

On a side note; those little tank obstacles in TT?  Very nice for the lower profile German armor to use.  I had alot of success using them for cover in a PZIV.  The Sherman certainly finds it much tougher achieving a hull-down defensive position there.

It is a Firefly, not an American Sherman.  It could easily do so.

You are right about the reverse though.  The Tiger easily could kill the Firely.

17 pounder on the firefly could penetrate tiger's frontal armor at 1000 yards.
That's with standard ap rounds.

I forgot the abbreviation for the special rounds that could do the same 2k out.

APDS

Armor Piercing Discarding Sabot

My info says penetrates 187mm at 2000yds

Only 10% of the Firefly tanks AP  loadout was APDS after D-Day (6-44)

If I'm in a tank guaranteed I get single-ping killed in a Tiger by a pintail gun at 2000yds.

No, I'm not exaggerating.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

I tried the Sherman Firefly last evening. I rolled out to find a Mk.IV Panzer that was supposedly hiding in the brush by the tower. Turned out to be bad info as the Panzer was about 1,000 yards east of the tower, and he knocked out my turret.

Upping another Firefly, I found that this was Panzer already dead. So, I went hunting and found another Mk.IV on a hill side. One hit at 2,300 yards blew him up. The round hit the frontal armor.

Going back to the V-base, I killed running troops with the .30cal and popped two T-34s at 800 yards, one round each.

What players need to understand is that at medium range, the 17 pounder is more lethal than the Tiger's 88mm.

The secret to success in tank fights is alway getting in the first shot. This is of even greater importance with the Firefly. Shoot and scoot. Fire and move.

My regards,

Widewing

High velocity armor piercing.
T34's were just loaded with this ammo. It will outperform standard AP rounds at 1,000 yds or less, while only slightly outperforming standard AP rounds at 1,500 yds or less.
Past 1,500 yds, standard AP rounds are penetrate armor better.
