Just a heads up on lockup problems
« on: January 01, 2002, 10:56:00 PM »
I have a SiS 730 board chipset running a Thungerbird 1 gig.512 Megs of ram,Nvidia Gforce 2 MX 400 card.
For 2 weeks I couldnt get into Aces without the instant lockup on line and off.Other games had intermitent problems but for 2 weeks I couldnt nail it down to any one thing.I could surf the web and download anything for the most part with ocasional lock up.After any lockup I got Cmos memory low. CMOS Battery low.I replaced and checked the new battery and still got the same thig.Flashed the bios.No good.Tested Memory,120,000 errors on both 256 sticks.Way to many for a memory error.Took out the G force, used Onboard and still get lockups and a 20 Frame rate flying.Ive basicly by process of elimination nailed it down to the motherboard.I get that this week and will update if that fixes it.Save someone a shatload of trouble if possable.

Why do you think it couldn't be bad ram?  Based on my own experiences over the past 3 months, bad ram is to blame for almost all the lockups I'm seeing.

Try getting a hold of memtest86 (free) and test that ram.  There is a link to it in the hardware forum from a post I made about memory testing utilities about a month ago.

Ran tests on the memory.Seemed to be ok till one spot durring test #5.Same results in basicly the same area. When Aces pushes this to the limit thats when it locked up.I took out the Nivdia card and it worked fine for the majority of the time.Any 3d accelerated grasphics caused problems.I now have a K7S5A board SiS chipset.Sound isnt working yet for some reason but I get an error that goes like this now when I try to get into Aces.

Initilization failed with_5 main sn_failed_2

I figgure that may be lack of sound.Am I correct?

Maybe you should have taken something else instead of SiS  :)

Yes, that's a prob with your sound. Install sound drivers again, make sure you have DX8.1 installed etc.
