Building a PC
« on: April 10, 2007, 06:34:39 PM »
My computer is definately old and out of date, and it sounds like my best option is to build my own PC instead of buying a new one.  Is there any type of checklist someone can post in regards to parts and what I will need to build?

Democracy is two wolves deciding on what to eat. Freedom is a well armed sheep protesting the vote.

How simple a list are you talking about, just the basic components?

Case, power supply, mobo, CPU with cooling fan, RAM, HD, vid card, sound card if not using mobo sound, cd/ dvd drive(s), updated drivers for mobo, vid card and then the OS.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

I just built this two months ago.

Case-Antec P180
Motherboard-BFG 680i
Power Supply-Antec Truepower 650 Trio
Memory-Crucial Ballistix 2x1GB 4-4-4-12   2.2 volt
CPU-Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
HSF-Cooler Master Hyper TX
Video Card-BFG 8800 GTS
Hard Drives-Western Digital Raptor X   150GB 10,000RPM Game Drive,Seagate Barracuda 300GB 7200RPM Storage and Program Drive
DVD Burner-
OS-OEM Windows XP
HP Lightscribe 18x DL

I went high end on everything, and you could save money by going with less on the motherboard, memory, and video card.I would still consider the Intel Core2 Duo E6600 CPU though. It's $308 right now at Newegg and hits the sweet spot for CPU's when it comes to performance/cost imho.

Floppy Drives are still needed.  Updating BIOS, mem testing programs, loading drivers during Windows Setup and various other things.
