Continuing Corsair Issues
« on: April 11, 2007, 10:24:38 PM »
There's still some issues with the Corsairs. Some minor, some possibly major, all it would be nice to see addressed. Some I know for sure haven't changed, others I haven't had the chance to see if there was any change made that just wasn't mentioned in the patch readme:

1. Squadron art still does not appear in the new Corsairs (1, 1A, 1D and 4). This I know for sure hasn't changed.

2. When the outer half of the wing is lost the wing tanks in the 1 and 1A are not affected.

3. I still question how the forward fuel tank can be perforated/lit on fire by hits to the TAIL section especially when being fired at a DOWNWARD ANGLE on a quite consistent basis, even by small-caliber rounds.

I'll admit that these images show the forward fuel tank DOES appear to extend down to the belly of the fighter (tho IMO it's still not very clear just what the configuration is, especially considering the wiring and piping that run into, around and past the tank at its lower half) however there's still quite a bit of stuff between the rear of the fighter and the fuel tank--if not armor, than even just striking the bulkheads forming the internal skeleton would be enough to alter a round's trajectory). Additionally the cockpit cutaway shows that it would take a VERY precise angle to fire a round all the way through the tail and into the fuel tank by anything OTHER than hits from below (especially once you account for rounds dropping due to gravity). A lucky hit I can see, but I've seen it occur far too frequently (both as the target, and the shooter) for these all to be "lucky."

4. Corsair gunsights. I know it's a relatively minor detail, but when using the full Mk.8 gunsight design (with extended crosshairs) I've shown that the projected sights in the bubble-top F4Us for certain (I haven't tried the birdcage  as it used a different sight of which I'm not sure how it indicated range, but its sight is roughly the same size as the bubble tops) are half the size they should be in the default head position. Aircraft such as the F6F and FM-2 which used the same Mk.8 sight are very nearly correct in the game (I had a thread showing it around here somewhere, but I can repost or e-mail my test data if you'd like).

While I used the Mk.8 because I could test it based based on mils and target wingspan, (the 100mil outer ring equating roughly to a 30-ft wingspan at 100yds) the F4Us can be very difficult to aim with because anything other than a simple ring-and-pipper sight picture tends to be cluttered and block out the target. It's also just such a SMALL sight picture.

The issue with gunsights is one that doesn't just affect the Corsairs. Many others have very small sights that are more difficult to aim with, while some aircraft and vehicles have very large, easily read sights.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.
