Which headset to buy?
« on: April 09, 2007, 01:40:00 PM »
I am looking at buying a headset since my other quit working.  I was thinking about buying the Razer HP-1 but the reviews on newegg are not very positive.  Anyone have/use them?  Any suggestions or comments for these and others are appreciated.

I've had logitech and plantronics headphones with microphone for gaming.
I honestly can't remember how many i've bought. Either the wires break inside or wears out or microphone breaks or whatever, i was going through them. They weren't too bad but...............

My last set is by far the best ever and has held up. Great sound and voice, very comfortable too. Sennheiser is the best.

I used to play a lot of competitive FPSers over the years and Icemat Siberias and Sennheisers make some of the best headphones or combos with mics.

In the past I've used the headsets with mics before and I've found that their quality is always subpar.  What I've done for the last few years has been buy a High Quality headphones (I'm an audio junkie) and a standard mic stand.  What I may lack in voice transmitting quality (usually stands kind of suck compared to boom mics on headsets) I make up for in durability and sound quality.  I have a pair of Sennheiser HD-4xx (cant remember off the top of my head, about $100).  I love these headphones and I love the fact I dont have a boom mic sticking in my face.  They take a fair amount of abuse and use and hold up.

The Sennheiser PC150 is a great headset and can be picked up off Newegg or just about any other online retailer cheaper than $50 after shipping. If you really need one now just follow the above advice and grab it at Compusa.

I burned through two Plantronics headsets, and the first Labtec headset.   I now use a stand alone Logitech Mic, and one the Plantronics headsets in which the headphones still work.   I am on the prowl for some Sennheiser headphones.   I'll never buy another headset, they suck.

I have had my PC155USB Sennheiser headset for over three years now. I paid close to $100 for it when it was first on the market and I use it several times a week and travel all over the USA with it stuck in my bag and use it for my laptop when traveling.

HOWEVER a good set of headphones is hard to beat by themselves.

Medusa 5.1 surround sound headphones all the way. There's both USB and soundcard versions. Each has a sound cancelling mic too.

Not cheap at around $120, but the situational awareness you get with true sound sound is amazing, even in AH. When I can hear someone attempting to climb up on my blind spot on my six, and I can even hear bullets whizzing by on the right or left, I sometimes start thinking it is an unfair advantage.

Only sometimes, though. ;-)

I appreciate all of the suggestions.  I've heard good things elsewhere about both the sennheiser and the medusa.  I think I'm going to purchase the medusa 5.1 home set.  When i get them, I will give my unbiased opinion of them incase someone else is looking.
I had a plantronics set before and really liked them a lot, but the cord got chopped.  The reason I'm not buying another pair is because I want the true 5.1 that some of the others offer.

I own the Medusa 5.1 headphones too.

They are awesome in every game. Avoid using USB with them.

The mic on them is crystal clear.

I like the Koss CS-100 headset/mic.  The mic voice quality is great, the earphone sound quality is good (including for deeper tones), and the CS-100 costs $15 from Bestbuy or Amazon.

I use these all the time and love them.
