lock ups when near clouds ..
« on: April 10, 2001, 03:09:00 AM »
Had the same problem in tour 6 and 7, i stripped my system clean off and testing all nothing helped. I checked and rechecked irq settings and fixed 1 problem nothing happend.
Then i replaced my gforce 2 card with my old tnt2 card and no lockups !
well since i was running a amd 800 with a gforce 2 and only had a 250W powersupply i was told that i needed a 300w powersupply to use my gforce 2 card with that other hardware so i did that and all went well also with the gforce 2 card.
Thing is after the new patch i get back in the same problems locking up when near clouds and havnt changed any hardware since that ?
for me it seems to be a problem with the clouds and nothing more but would like too hear when the lockups starts for other too.
my system :
amd800 no overclocking
abit kt7 raid via motherboard
256 mb sdram 133
guillmont gforce 2 with the ndivia 752 driver
2 hard drives using the raid option
no irq problems

Air guard..prolly no help here, but i
definatley think there is a problem with
GF2 and AMD and AH.  I get lockups with my
GF2 in AH but, after reinstalling CFS and
CFS2 no lockups???  That would seem to eliminate power supply and such system
problems since CFS2 is more dmanding than AH
graphics wise.  Do u lock up in your other games?  If not, we should alert the staff at
AH.  Its got to be AH?!?!

If you look through this board at all the lockup threads, you will find that it's almost NEVER an AH problem.  The solution is invariable related to power, RW, video or audio drivers, DX8, BIOS settings... etc. etc.

To start with, if you have RW, remove it.

Get the latest sound and video drivers.

Install DX8.

Scan and defrag your hard drive.

Disable all other programs such as virus scanners and firewalls before running AH.

Now try it.    There are some other solutions, but in my experience the above process will solve most problems.

My system is :
PIII-800EB Coppermine
PC-133 memory (128 mgs)
GeForce 2 32 meg Pro (7.54 drivers, have tried all the drivers, including 11.01)

Tried the following after going to DX8:

Upgraded to new soundcard SBLIVE and latest drivers.

Tried various drivers for the GeForce.

Diabled Video Cache Bios.

HT suggested to change bios to 133, but I don't have that option in my bios (800/133 or 800/100 is only options for 800 series)

I experience lock ups if I don't disable the Winfast utility that came with the GeForce2, the SBLIVE panel.

Haven't tried disabling RW totally, will do more experiments with that.

I'm having a system "stuttering" problem, which
I've indiccated in another thread...I also
have a 1.5Mb DSL connection and am running
Zone Alarm.
Are you saying I should disable ZA and leave
my system vulnerable to all sorts of havoc
from the net while I'm flying AH???

I'm sorry, but THAT is NOT and option I'm
willing to try.

I have, however, marked AH as being able to
bypass the "lock", which I normally do NOT
have engaged, and to be abe to connect without
requiring additional permissions.

I have not had any probelms with any other
application that I run with my current system
configuration or operational practices. Only
AH...
On the subject of ZA, it is VERY annoying to
have to hit the reset button when I happen to
try to get online with AH and a new patch has
been installed...the ZA pop-up is not visable
and although I blindly type in R and Y to
attempt to satisfy ZA, it doesn't seem to
work. Sure would be nice if that pop-up was
ALLOWED to actually pop up!

Here's a long shot, but it relates to the Abit kt7:

Find out what the Agp voltage is.  If it is 3.5 instead of 3.3 volts, try setting it to 3.3 volts via a jumper on the MB.

Also, the Gf2 card generates about 2x the amount of heat and uses 2x the amount of power as a TNT2, make sure you have proper cooling.

(Like stated above, make sure video bios cacheing and shadowing is disabled.)

Bloom i might try that voltage changing.
ill post and tell how that went out when done and tested.

And cooling is fine i drilled a square hole in my tower and mounted a huge global win 120mm card cooler to blow right on my video card
among other things i got all the newest drivers including dx8.0
but still cant figure out why this and now im sure happens when im close to the clouds ?

Gypsy Baron,

I'm not suggesting you disable ZA permanently, or even always when flying AH.  I'm saying you should try disabling ZA to see if you can isolate the problem.  Once we have the problem narrowed down, we can work through the rest.

I know many folks play AH with ZA, so that is not likely the problem.  However, for troubleshooting purposes, you need to eliminate everything possible so we can identify the problem.

Do you have any sort of connection icon, or anything that might flash in the system tray while playing?  If so, try to disable the icons.  If you can't disable the icon, try setting the taskbar to auto-hide and see if that helps.
