Stuttering with new patch
« on: April 10, 2001, 06:57:00 AM »
Hi
After the new patch, i have this very anoying
stuttering. My framerates are between 30 and 100 so that is not the fault. I have tried switching irq for the videocard til my fingers bleed. I have formatted my c: drive and reinstalled only the necessaries to run AH. I have tried all my video drivers from beta to whql. dx7 and dx8. used to have no problems at all and never has, from the first beta till now.

my system:
amd 800 @ 908
256 mb ram
Voodoo 5500 (i know there has been prob.)
win 98 se
use a sidewinder pro with software from microsoft.(poll interupts and not)
256 kb adsl line (no beacon)

hope you are able to help
thx

Stuttering with new patch

To be honest, there have been far fewer problems with the V5 5500 than with the nVidia cards.  I've had one for months, and it has been flawless.

Are you running Roger Wilco?  If so, try setting it to "wav" recording.  If that doesn't do it, remove RW altogether.  Use the last beta drivers that 3DFX put out, they work perfectly.

If you still have problems, I suspect your sound card.  Be sure to update your soundcard drivers to new one that support Direct X 8 as well.

Other than that, it's likely something running in the backgroud that causes the problem, such as a firewall or a virus scanner.  Try disabling these programs before you start AH.

Check your system tray, any flashing icon, for example connection status, or zonealarm, can cause stuttering with 3dfx cards.

Hi thx for the very fast replies

I have disabled RW, dont know how to uninstall it in AH. I use liveware 3.0 with an update from creative as well. I have also lowered the taskbar to get the netstatus icon away. Nothing is running in back ground is running that is not needed. I also use the a beta driver that was designed for the v6000, but modified to v5500. good performance   Also no earlier problems with them.
I have just now tried to run in 32 bit.....it helps
lower framerate but not nearly as bad a stuttering..funny

all help still welcome

Not sure about this, but I dont think just lowering the taskbar will keep the netstauts icon from causing your stuttering problem.  I remember reading something here from Bloom25 or one of the other gurus that said you have to disable it completely....simply hiding the taskbar wont do it.

I have this ADSL line and it requires a special PCI card to work. The setup of that card wont let me turn off the icon for net status. I still think its funny that pre patch 4 there was no problems....now I can only play it in 32 bit witch works (but is slower). That I think is strange  ???

Thx for all the replies

=========================================
I have a similar problem, Kris, but it
usually doesn't develop until I man a TG
gun or vehilcle. The stuttering occurs both
online and offline and seems to get
progressively worse, until it reaches a point
where I am no longer able to continue
playing...mouse input is VERY slow, as are
keyboard inputs...sound from gunfire stutters
and lasts several seconds...

Yesterday, after having manned a panzer and
noticed the problem starting to occur I went
back to flying a B-26. After and engagement
my opponent said I was warping badly. In
light of this I think that there must be some
AH-induced process(s) sucking up CPU time
and causing the processes that SHOULD be
running to have to wait. Wish I could get
some dynamic data on what's using CPU time
while I'm still in AH.

I'm running:
PIII-600 Mhz, 128 MB system memory
Creative SB Live
Creative TNT2 32MB AGP video card
1.5Mb DSL connection
USB mouse
TM FCS & WCSII, Rudder Pedals

I was running DX7.0a and updated to DX8.0
I have loaded the latest drivers for the
SB Live sound card and the 650 drivers for
the TNT2 card.
Frame rates displayed are between 28-50.

Even after I quit AH, the stuttering
continues to affect my system. When I
open RealPlayer and then invoke any other
application the sound stutters...I have
to re-boot to eliminate the problem.

I have not seen this sort of behavior with
any other application I run...it is most
definately AH specific and I feel is somehow
related to ACK puffs, tracers, water splashes
and other effects since the system slowdown
definately becomes worse when these events
occur...

The progressive nature of the problem seems
to indicate that something is sucking up
system resources and not releasing them
although when I ALT-TAB out nothing out of
the ordinary shows up in and available
system information that I look at.

OK I have my problems elsewhere, but I will mention them here too, have just gone to new machine system, etc, P4 1400 Win ME Cardexpert Geforce2 hollywoodMX, SB LIve, and am getting flickering and a stutter that is online and off and is mostly constant. It gets worse with tracers and flak noises. Flak noise reall drives it up. I was dropping alot too, though this may have been network as after this afternoon I ran all night (though with stutter). I can not turn off my icon in Earthlink, I toggle it off in System and in Earthlink, but it displays a tool bar icon with status on it if you open it no matter what. This did not happen on my PIII 400 voodoo 3 win 98 (which I also used earthlink on though in that system the tool iconis a minimized program bar icon). I have updated SB driver (I already had the best it said) and video driver. Nada effect.

Ok guys just went on to check things out, still the same top screen flicker until in game then bottom screen flicker. Asked around and three gusy responded to having the same problem. ALL of us used Earthlink BUT I at least get the problem offline as well as on. So unless Earthlink is somehow causing trouble offline not sure thats it (and earthlink worked well on other machine). Also ALL of us had either Win ME (three of us do) or WIn 2000.  I begin to think its a WIN ME/2k issue or a combo of that and something (at least one of us also had GeForce2).  Enough peeps that I dont think its a personal IRQ conflict issue, sounds more like a AH conflict or bug. Any ideas ? Another string here talks about this problem as well (my NEW MACHINE NO WORK). Cross posting as clearly same issue I think and have guys on that one already.

A new update, I have DLd and installed all of the latest Windows ME patches form microsoft, game still flickers off line. Somewhere along the line I DLd the latest Earthlink version as well with no effect. Is there someway to combine these two strings?

It's very unlikely to be Aces High.  If that were the case everyone with similar systems would be having problems, which I guarantee they aren't.

Yello1, I want you to check a couple things for me.  Go to: start -> settings -> control panel -> system -> performance tab -> file system button, tell me what it says under the "typical role" box.  (I.e. Desktop Computer, Network Server, etc.)  If it's desktop, change this to network server and let the system restart.  This will make your system about 10% faster in disk access.

Next, go to start -> settings -> control panel -> system -> device manager tab -> click the + sign for "disk drives".  If you see one that says something like "Generic IDE type 47" or something like that, left click it once and pick properties.  Click the settings tab and tell me whether or not there is a check box that says "DMA" and if it is checked or not.  If it isn't, you've paid for an Ultra DMA hard drive and the guy who set the system up never turned on Ultra DMA!  Since you have an Ultra DMA drive this should be checked, or checked and greyed out.

Judging by his past record I wouldn't put it past him.

Bloom you are right they were not selected, but I read your post on this and changed both before, no change in the flickering screen.  There are others with this problem, I got three others in response to a question in one session and then there are these people here. The only commonality not ruled out is the Windows ME/2000 system.  They also had earthlink as I did but the problem is offline and on and like I said I erased earthlink but got same problem still. I think the number of peeps running ME may be low and this is why there is not more of an outcry. Also the game is playable just the flickering is real annoying and performance is slightly impaired I think.
