I’ll tell you what: the next time an event happens that could lead to a psycho going on a killing spree, you call it.  Post on this BBS every time there’s a shooting, bomb threat or whatever; you post what city, campus, county or whatever should be locked down and for how long.  No more after-the-fact stuff, you’ve got to call them all ASAP because before they happen you don’t know.

This was a tragic event, but what is reasonable?
New York City has the lowest crime rate among the ten largest cities in the United States.  There were 597 murders in NYC last year; how many days should it have been shut down?  Note that we are looking at murder as only one indicator of a potential mass killing.

I don't know about the rest of the guys, but I am ready to crown you Shuckins, "Monday morning QB of the week."  You can't plan for stupid. There are plenty of stupid ppl on this planet. The staff at VT already have a though job ahead of them informing family members of the dead. What they do not need, are a bunch of reporters who don't know their elbows from their as-----'s telling the free world what they could have done to prevent this.

No way in hell they could.   I'm sorry, too many intangibles.    How many guards do they have, and would THEY be willing to get shot?   Most are students themselves and would watermelon themselves if faced with this.

26,000 students, in cafeterias, classes, gyms, dorms, libraries, etc, and everywhere in between.   Translation?  A logistical nightmare.

Asked why the campus, which has more than 26,000 students, was not shut down after the first shooting, Flinchum responded that police determined "it was an isolated event to that building and the decision was made not to cancel classes at that time."

Steger added, "We had some reason to believe the shooter had left campus."

That is why the campus wasn't closed after the 1st shooting.

It may BE too early to jump to any conclusions,  but interviewed students have stated that they were not informed of the first shooting until after the second shooting spree had ended.

I have two sons attending college.  I would want them to KNOW about it....so they could make their OWN decisions about whether or not to remain on campus.

If you can close a campus because of bad weather you can damn well close it because of a shooting.  At the very least, you can inform the students that there is a potentially dangerous situation on campus, cancel classes, and keep the kids in the dorms.  I see no problem to losing a class day while erring on the side of caution.

It's not like this has never happened before.

Instead of Monday morning quarterbacking this, I'd like to suggest a change going forward to learn from this and protect the students better in the future.

Specifically, I'd like to see campus rules and laws prohibiting people who have CCWs from carrying firearms repealed.  I see that many colleges adopt 'No firearms allowed on campus' laws.  If that was changed, a future incident might be averted earlier on by someone in the crowd.

could they have?
Maybe

Should they have?
I dont think so.

2 kids are shot. Shooter still on the loose. While looking for a shooter do you really want thousands of other people mulling about?
Or would you rather get them all into isolated little groups in specific locations
