Not to take away....
« on: April 22, 2007, 06:59:03 PM »
Some general topic, but I feel this is distant enough to be it's own thread.  I don't want to take anything away from the horrible tragedy at VT, but what kind of message is our media sending to our soldiers?

Of course no one deserved to die @ VT.  And what makes it so horriffic, is they were at college, and so thought there was no danger, so that is what makes this story shocking.

But since the event has happened, the media has done nothing but cover the lives of the 32 dead.  Every in and out detail.

And what happens when a soldier dies?  Maybe the state paper will have an article, and a late night broadcast.

Like I said, i'm not trying to take away anything from these people who had their lives so viciously taken from them, however, i'm really having a problem with our news, and how they have all but forgotten the real heroes.

The media is full of sheep and that's just what they do. Nothing is ever going to change that.

The soilders out there are all sheepdogs and don't really care what the sheep think. They know what they are doing and so do the rest of the sheepdogs. That's all that matters to them.

The fact that those people at VT "thought" they were safe because they were in a "gun free zone" goes to show you just how far into denial the sheep really are.

I know, man, it's almost a week old, already.  Those mourning and looking for answers should all shut up and get back to work

C'mon, Cav, you can't be serious, right?  The war has been all there is in the news (celebrity deaths, buzzcuts, and outbursts notwithstanding) for years now (albeit certainly deservingly so).  Can't VT get a bit of coverage and sympathy?

At least a week's worth?

Vud -  My post wasn't meant as to how you took it.  I feel for all of them, and I think all of their stories should be told.  It's terrible what happened.  As a college student myself, I would have thought getting killed while in class was one of the last places I could go, if it were to happen.

so yea, I think it should be covered, and I think their stories should be told.

I just wish our media would also be willing to tell the storys of the heroe's killed in Iraq.

Cav this is a bit different.

I really hurt for the parents of the murdered students. I nearly lost my son in February, and there's been a lot on this BBS about that. However as the father of two soldiers, I dread the phone call always have. It's a nightmare I have to realize is very possible because of my sons chosen profession.

When the call came telling me my son was seriously wounded, it was terrible. Yet I was able to come to grips much faster than somebody who would have lost their child or had their child badly wounded in something like the VT killings.

Don't get me wrong I would be the very last person to say the loss of a Soldier or Marine is no big thing. Each and every casualty is a big thing to me. It's a war though, and these are the things that happen in war. If you have loved ones in the war, you have to steel yourself for every possibility.

The loss of these students is another thing. They did not volunteer to put their lives on the line at the University. Their families could never have expected this, and shouldn't have to. This is a tragedy that should never have happened period. I will always have a heavy heart for what these families have had to endure.

I hope this post makes sense.

Cav, I wholeheartedly agree that our fallen men deserve to be honored as much as anyone killed by a nutjob like the one at VT.

There is one drawback to this though sir, (Sadly)

If it would catch on, I am afraid it would be used by the anti-war drumbeaters to make cheap political points with an average of 3 new objects (fallen soldiers) to beat their audience into submission with every single 24 hour news cycle.

Imagine the joy this would bring our enemies to be able to celebrate Americans falling apart at the seams and diluting our resolve to fight this global war on terror.   This alone could weaken us enough to give them a victory.

But once again, I am with you, they have given us everything they had to give and deserve to be as well known to us as anyone else.  It is a shame that such a thing would be horribly misused though.
