I'm having trouble identifying the enemy A/C in that pic so I'm just going to assume this is a picture of a Bf-109 in pursuit of the Smoke Monster.

The smoke trail is from the remnants of an exploding P-51.  Sometimes an explosion sends out streams of smoking debris - that is the mysterious "Smoke Monster".  :) 
Tried to get a good angle on both the smoke and the 109 but it wasn't happening.  Ended up choosing the smoke as the subject and the 109 is just window dressing.
