Never saw a pitot tube that was six feet long.  It's a ramrod.  When they ran out of gas, the 163 pilots would try to creep up and poke bomber pilots with the poison tip.  My great uncle was in the Fahrveghnugen Squad.  He told me all about it.

Are you sure? I heard it was the mid-air refueling probe. It was an attempt to increase the Me 163's short range to allow for long range escort missions. Several of the German bombers in the mission would be loaded with extra fuel rather than bombs. The 163s would then refuel in flight from the fuel toting bombers, allowing a fully escorted mission to London from Berlin.

I believe you are correct, that was the original intent.  However as fuel supplies dwindled and the enemy put more pressure on Berlin, the Germans changed to a more desperate tactic.  With the 163 being so nimble, it was determined that a pilot could approach a bomber from above and "harpoon" the pilot.  As an added measure, the refuelling rod was sharpened to a point and dipped in strychnine.  The problem was getting close enough to the bombers for the poison to do it's work.  The Ar-234s converted for refueling were then equipped with additional pilot armor and were to be used as bait for the buff gunners.  That way the 163s could zoom in unopposed.  There was a special about the Fahrveghnugen Squad on the History Channel.  My great uncle, Hans Rudolph Von Klippendorffer was even interviewed!  He said he shot down two bombers like this and two more with the guns!

here's two more from today.

here's a pony that was buzzing around the base, f6f turned into him to avoid being picked.   the floor hits in front of f6f was me shooting at the pony from the side with my il2. f6f went down, pony's engine quit about 4 seconds later.  i believe that was a collision too.

same pony here, I put 1 round with my il2 from 1k just as the pilot was about to bail. lucky shot.

Refuel the Me 163 in the air you joking :O On the ground it had to be fueled in a special way as it carrys 2 different types of fuel and when mixed the are more highly ignigtable than petrol. And when Mixed if exposed to atmospheric pressure that can even ignight the fuel. As from what i read the 163 pilots would rather bail out of the 163 than land as the slightest misstake on landing and KABOOM. Thats also the reason it was never produced as much as the 262 as Georing didnt want to loose what experienced pilots he had left.

Good chance its the pito tube or summit that was needed when they where slung under Ju 88's. But hey nothing a bit o research can resolve for us :) As it isnt to make it look Pretty thats impossible :lol maybe to make allied pilots think it looked slower than it was :lol
