I wonder if this replaces the x1950 as king?

The problem with these top of the line AGP cards is that motherboards and processors that have AGP slots are so old that these new graphics cards outperform the CPU, thus creating a bottleneck.  Basically because you'll have a slower processor you'll get the same performance (FPS, etc) out of a card thats say 256mb and $75 cheaper.

The morale of the story, in order to actually use these cards to their potential you better have the fastest CPU available on your old motherboard (its probably something single core).

AGP cards now cost more than PCI-E, not because its more expensive but merely supply and demand.  Save your money gents.

Whats to stop someone from having an FX-57 or FX -60 with an AGP slot? Most of the nforce3 939 boards support those cpu's and they will push a 7950 just fine. There are  alot of dual core amd's running on agp boards too.
Hell you can get intel core 2 duo boards in AGP if you want to , there are alot of possible reasons for still having an high end AGP card.

Oh btw i posted those two articles on here a month or so ago, so i have read them  . :D   If you read them , you will see their is a decent gain even in the older barton system , not saying i would go put a 250 dollar card in a barton machine but a gain is a gain .

Remember during the GeForce 6800 days when "AGP was dead forever"?  They were nere to be found...  Now high end AGP is growing on trees.

I'm still bitter...bought a new motherboard to upgrade my video card...now AMD has swapped sockets on me again so AGAIN my upgrade path is limited.

Curse you socket designers!

The HELL it is!!

Even the upper-middle range is scarce!! There was only ONE AGP Ge7600GT card available for over a year. It was sold out 99.99999% of the time because everybody wanted it. Because of this, it was marked up quite high, $50 more than the PCIe version (almost $200!!!). Only recently has another brand of Ge7600GT come out, and they're still fairly scarce!

There might be a couple of Ge7800s to choose from, but not many 7900 series.

Compare them to a newegg search PCIe vs AGP, you get a very small handful of high-end AGP cards and page after page after page after page of PCIe cards.

"growing on trees" my muscular buttox. :furious

That's why I switched from AGP to PCIe, piss poor selection.

Plenty of good AGP solutions available though, just not solutions that'll get you ultimate 3dmark bragging rights.  I picked up a x1650Pro AGP for my dad and was really impressed.  Got it under 100bux and is really surprising.

The few months during which  I  had to make the transition, everything AGP was sold out..or stupidly expensive.  The bridge chips from nVidia were becoming scarce and the x800's were getting a little long in the tooth.  Had I held on a little longer I could have picked up an AGP solution but...the price difference was such that it was cheaper to get a pci-express motherboard AND a gpu.

Today, the x1650's are a great AGP choice for budget, and the x1950 isn't unreasonably expensive....but I agree...AGP users are still getting the shaft...especially by nVidia.

I hate forced migration, especially when the benefit is, even still...not that clear (for a single card that is).  And I hate how the AGP versions are sometimes shipping at reduced clock speeds...for no reason other than marketing.  (and a good way to dump substandard chips)

AMEN!

When I made the "forced" switch, the x1650 wasn't out yet. I might have got it instead, but c'est la vie. At least, due to my forced migration, I got a mobo that supports Conroe chips (which my old one didn't), so some good came of it.

Us poor AMD fans got a double shaft.  New motherboard for PCI-express...then months later the AM2 socket comes out.  I assumed 939 and AM2 would go hand in hand for 2007, with 939 cpu's under the "Sempron" monkier but...again...the shaft.

I heard one pessimistic AMD fan saying they'll probably change it yet again for the next big chip they're working on.

I have an AMD 3.2 CPU and a GeForce 6600GT that I am happy with. Frame rates in the 50's and 30's in a furball. Was thinking about a new Vid card in a few months, but I gather from what you guys are saying I would have a bottle neck with my CPU. That is even if could find an AGP card I liked. That sound about right gents?

Maybe my next upgrade should be a new MB and the whole works.

My dad upgraded from a 6600GT to the x1650Pro.  The increase was dramatic.  He's running an AMD Sempron 2600+.  For AH, what you have is fine, but he was having some trouble playing Company of Heroes, the x1650Pro cleared that right up.  :)
