Sample Screenshots of the new Patch
« on: April 26, 2007, 07:49:30 PM »
Here are some sample screenshots I took for those who are still at work, or didn't get a chance to see the fixed terrains. These were taken at 1600x1200 resolution, using the hi-res texture pack. They are unaltered and direct from the game, with the exception of image size and format.

As I've posted in other thread, playing first time on this new patch one may feel that the visuals are 'washed out'. This is what I recommend you should do:

First, try to reset monitor and AH game gamma settings to 1.0. Since AH only deals in gamma adjustments, you can always change this later after you've set other settings first. Add a bit of contrast to the monitor so the "washed out" feel goes away, and then adjust the brightness or intensity of the monitor to your liking. You might also want to retouch the RGB values of your monitor a bit. And then, after all that's done, finally adjust the gamma while in game.

I've set my settings so it matches perfectly to my taste, and this is what I have (it might be a bit darker for other people):

A low-alt shot from a Bf109K-4

Starting a climb in a P-51D, shortly after take-off

10~11 O'c view, while changing heading towards target zone. Hapstur's throwing a riot again

High-alt shot.. after grabbing some altitude, the repetitive patterns show a bit.. the only drawback IMO

A brief snap-shot during combat - it's breathtakingly beautiful[/b]

Frankly, this is the best terrain I've flown in any flight-sim genre game.

[edit] On the general, IMO IL2/FB/'45 series does have a better terrain. However, that's in accordance to their advanced lighting methods, the more detailed depiction of smoke, fire, clouds.. the water, the reflections, etc etc. However, when one compares the trees, the forests, and the earth itself - which makes up more than 90% of what you see on the terrain, AH is (now) definately better.

The only thing I miss.
And this is really a very VERY small gripe and really no big deal.
Is in the version when I first started playing.
When you were at alt.,,say 20K
You could see the curvature of the earth. That I always thought was a real cool touch
Now if you look into the distance its like a whitish jagged edge.

Its really not a huge issue  as I dont spend a real lot of time paying attention to it anyway

yeah drediock. i agree. it's because HTC have changed the fog distance. perhaps if they bring it in a couple of miles it will get rid of those lines on the horizon (actually, i know it will)

if any HTC employees are reading this thread, could you think about bringing in the fog draw distance in 1 or 2 miles? looks like it's at about 17 now. try 14 or 15, it'll look better on the horizon

The lines on the horizion are not caused by the change in fog distance, but rather the lowering of the haze gradient on the horizon.

Is that why we can just barely see the saw-tooth tile edges at the horizon?

What does "lowering the haze gradient" do for the visuals we see? (just makes it look better?)

No Im not talking about the Fog.
When I first started playing. when you were up high. and looked at the horizen, you could see the curvature of the earth.
It was a REALLY cool effect. Expecially at twilight when the sun was rising/setting. It looked just like the it really does from the air
there was no jagged saw tooth edge.

The version after that they changed texures or something and they got rid of the curvature and added the fog/haze effect. and its been that way since.

Just saying  while I dont pay too much attention to it .I sometimes notice its not there I kinda miss it cause it looked so sharp.

BUT. its no huge issue.

I hope some other solution can be found in the future than the current horizon haze being closer.
In some weather conditons the far away hills actually look darker than the nearby ones. Now they all become lighter, light blue or such. I can understnad why it is done, but I just dont like the visual effect :(

Nearby textures (the new, more detailed ones) are great. However, the dark green forrest textures actually hide the trees. Trees and 3d forrests actually (IMHO) look much nicer on a lighter ground texture.

Still.. big leaps forwards. S! HTC

Dred, I think the curvature you saw was an illusion caused by a fog radius... the terrain is Pre-Columbian FLAT... always was.
