They'll just be a table on a database and each player is just a row in that table. 5,000 rows in a database table is nothing.

Not really. I use avatars on my board that are 58x58. They only have to load once and then they are stored in the visitors cache. Average avatar size = 5kb, we have about 200 different avatars, that's still only 1000kb. If every member were to clear their cache at the same time and then reload the icons, It'd use about 100gb of bandwidth, but that's not likely to happen.
