I only ask because it was from 1937, and most of the tanks in this game came much much later, when the armor was quite thicker than it was in 1937.

It was quite powerful for a 37mm - much more so than the German 37mm tank/anti-tank gun, and comparable with the British 2 pounder: it would penetrate 46mm armour plate at 500 yards, at a striking angle of 30 degrees.
The pic below (from the Ammunition Photo Gallery on my website) shows the 37x223R US ammo next to some others in use in 1942 tank guns.
