Help....
« on: May 02, 2007, 03:11:13 AM »
I'm not a PC guy, and have no idea where to start on getting the most out of the system that I'm using for AH.

Here is the info on the hardware I'm using. Any suggestions on what to disable, what to upgrade to etc. would be greatly appreciated.

System info is as follows:
Windows XP Pro Service pack 1
HP Pavillion zd7000
Pentium 4 2.80Ghz
2.79Ghz
256MB of RAM

NVIDIA GeForce Go5200
Driver date 3/14/04

Cable modem w/ethernet connections.

I have the screen refresh rate set @ 60mhz, which is the most I could get (no unlimited option)

I've also played around with the hardware acceleration but the slider set any further than one click to the left and AH won't start up.

The direct 3D settings are @ "best performance" for Mipmap detail level.

The problems I'm having are with "jumping" when I'm either merging, firing, dropping bombs, or in a huge furball w/ lots of bombs and fires.

When I bring up the "ctrl I" menu, I'm getting FR that goes from 0-26 range when I'm either in a GV or on the runway right from the tower, or in high action areas, and all the way up to mid 60's range but never any better than 67, when I'm flying above 10k with no clouds.

This screen also tells me that my system memory is ~255.00 and my usage is usually ~233.00.

Does this mean that I need to bump up the RAM on this box or maybe a video card? I'm an automotive tech by trade, so I don't like throwing parts at something hoping to fix it eventually, I'd like to diag it first and figure out what's wrong with it/needs to be upgraded.

Thanks for the help.

Seems you have a laptop computer there.. And a pretty powerful one too (compared to what I'm used to). It's not that much you can upgrade on a laptop. Certainly not the graphics. RAM is low however. Even my cheapo Gateway laptop has 1GB or RAM.

See for example (something I just googled):
http://www.archmemory.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=30645

The built in graphics is probably fast enough unless you try to turn on Anti Aliasing, when things tend to start to crawl. (Regardless, there is nothing that can be done about the graphics hardware on a laptop.)

If the drivers work I wouldn't mess with them.
