New smoke idea

Okay, this one's simple... We already have the system in place.

I was just thinking about the other request I made about making planes that set an enemy on fire get more credit for the kill.

I was thinking about how they're still a threat. That's not realistic, IMO.

Here's the request. Make the cockpit fill with smoke. Just like a grey haze drifting upwards. Enough to make it hard to see outside the viewscreen, but not enough to totally obscure things.

Basically it has the same effect as oil on the windscreen: discourages further combat, but doesn't totally prevent it. If you can't see you're more likely to try and get outta there.

Also on bombers it could fill the entire cabin as well (all positions -- not sure about bombsight).

Just a thick grey haze. Doesn't even have to move if you want it to be simple. Slight movements (like in the smoke on a burning hangar) would be nice though.

Doesn't even have to be visible for other planes, just the one on fire.

Im sure smoke found its way into the cockpit.

On the topic of smoke, Id like PT boats to be able to lay a smoke screen.

The engine on fire is in FRONT of you. And therefore, where it is, where the SMOKE is coming from, is where the cockpit is about to be. And there ARE in fact holes in the cockpit. ESPECIALLY if its been as shot up as one would expect with a fire. Smoke would be filling the cockpit in real life faster than you can imagine! And yes, I like the idea, but mostly because I keep getting set on fire, but because im looking directly in FRONT of me, I dont notice until I go poof. This would be a good visual indication no matter WHAT direction you happen to be looking in.

We dont have engine fire in AH. The irony is that engine fire was far more common than fuel tank fire in RL, as far i know.

I dont know what we are talking about tha answer is clear, if a wing catches fire, then the systems i.e. flaps alirons eng, etc should slowly degrade as the fire makes its way through structure.

hydralic oil and aircraft fuel on fire at 200 knots has the effect of a blowtorch eating up aluminum aircraft like a beer can in a fire.
So degridation of flight control in the affected area followd by an explosion.

another thing guys I was reading that somtimes the fires burned themselves out, leaving damage but allowing the craft to return to base.
Some seriouse thoughts thanx for the forum.:aok

wouldn't the pilot cough like crazy instead of still trying to fly his plane? i think that's the reason why pilots in WW2 bailed, that and heat from fire.

P.S. an idea, shouldn't we get pilot wound every time plane is on fire? except on bombers where fire start from wings.

the game is concentrated on combat, not on shaking the screen.

Man I have enough problems with oil on the windshield.  Now you want to add more stuff to block my vision?! :cry
But seriously, this would be a nice addition to the damage system.

Warning: Little Off-Topic
I have found the oil on the windshield a little biased between planes.  Especially on the 109 cockpit with the small window in front of the gunsight.  It seems that the oil is more concentrated in that area compared to other planes in the same spot.

I mean in other planes if my oil is out, I can make a pretty good attempt to still use my gunsight and shoot down another plane.  But when I was flying the 109 the other day, I could barely make out the plane at 200 - let alone follow the plane in the horrid 109 cockpit!  Basically what I'm saying it make the oil concentration the same on all planes (either as bad as the 109 or as bad as any other plane).

It would be nice if the severity of oil leak was reflected on the amount of oil on my cockpit.  Example, the 15 min leaks (before you're out of oil) wouldn't be nearly as bad as the 2 min leak (where you wouldn't be able to see pretty much anything), annoying but more realistic?  Someone dig up that pic of that p47/p51 that someone posted a month ago or so with the cockpit just completely smeared.
