Spinning Clipboard - Intel Core2 CPU
« on: April 29, 2007, 09:40:31 AM »
All of the prior threads that I’ve seen on this seem to indicate that the problem is AMD CPU related, so permit me to add to the confusion :)

I too am getting the Spinning Clipboard in the opening screen and when I try to proceed, it crashes AH.

I’m able to get around it by running it in Win95 Compatibility Mode (Win2000 and Win98/ME modes don’t do the trick).

Note that even in Win95 Mode the sim still appears to be running multi-threaded, as I have an external display of the CPU usage (Logitech G15 Keyboard) and both cores are working. I also didn’t notice any decrease in frame rate (with it set to Unlimited, it pretty much stays at 60FPS).

I’ve had the problem throughout the last several AH versions.

The problem started at the same time that I updated my mobo BIOS (from Rev F7 to F9) but I may have updated the AH version simultaneously.

CPU:   Intel Core-2 2.4GHz (6600)
Mobo:   Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 * Rev-1.0 * BIOS-F9
Video:   nVidia GeForce 7600GT * Driver-v93.71
OS:   WinXP-Pro SP2

AH Current Version 2.10 Patch 2

there is one way to force games to use 1 CPU and not both.

that is a program called "runfirst"

http://www.activeplus.com/us/freeware/runfirst/

you put the runfirst file in system folder (system32 i think it was) then change your game short cut to

runfirst "C:\Games\Aceshigh.exe"

this may help.

Actually I’m OK the way I am... I only posted it as a bug report and satisfactory work-around because running in Win95 mode fixes the clipboard/crash problem and (fortunately) doesn’t appear to inhibit it’s multithreading.

Thanks anyway Anyone :)

If you update the BIOS ROM, you may need to update the INF drivers for the motherboard as well.  This problem usually will only show up for an Intel CPU when the INF files have not been installed, updated, or if it is the Intel mobile CPU.

Skuzzy, I have a question about that.

I've got a P4 2.66GHz Prescott with 533MHz FSB right now. I was running a BIOS at version 1.80. I ordered a new CPU, and checked the webpage for my mobo which listed a slew up updates to the BIOS, including tweaked support for the new CPU I've ordered.

I updated the BIOS to version 2.40.

Now the fan is louder, even at idle. The CPU fan never drops below 3000 rpm. It's not any hotter than it used to be. I've gone in and tried to set the quiet fan function in BIOS but doesn't seem to help much.

Does this mean I need to update the INF I'm using in windows??

Will I need to do anything other than take out the old CPU and put in the new CPU? From memory, WinXP should just auto-install the proper drivers for this chip.

Hardware,  I had same problem. a MS Hotpatch fixed it.  I believe it             was   KB896256    Hope it helps.

Skuzzy,

Good thought but no go... I did update the mobo/chipset driver and it didn’t have any effect on the problem.

Thanks,

HG428CJ

Thanks. I went over & read the KB documentation on KB896256 and it looks like it might do the trick... however, I'm going to hold off on trying it.

Right now everything else is working fine and there doesn't seem to be any downside (on my system) to running AH in Win95 mode, so I'm going to go with the old adage, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

BTW, just in case we meet in the air, how does one pronounce HG428CJ ?? :)
