Stuck already...
« on: April 13, 2006, 10:32:22 AM »
... and just started playing with the TE. Step 1 is always the hardest I guess. The Te  help file says the following,  Four templates marked with 25 mile sector lines are provided in the ../HTC/aheditor/terrains/maps directory.  I have no maps directory in the aheditor.

Any help would be appreciated...thx, aztec

The Help file in AH2 has many things that are "left over" from the AH1 TE and don't apply anymore. Clutter Shapes...???

You can make your own template, if you're just looking to sketch out some ideas.

1. Create a new terrain. Set the map size to be what you want (256, 512, etc.)
2. Don't lay any tiles, just leave the entire map as water.
3. Make Map, selecting gridlines as an option.
4. Open up the Map.bmp file that you just created into a bitmap editor, and invert it and color adjust it to black and white. Print it out and start doodling!

I still wish I could figure out how to make my own map.bmp style file. Instead of having the junky TE-generated map.

Ahhh, I think I know.

The TE needs a terrain file loaded, even if you don't want it. Create a new terrain, name it, save it, close it, and reopen it.

It should work then.

Try Mapbmp by NHawk.
Easy in-game again.

Yikes, making terrains is hard and crashy.

I am having trouble making a map that is one elevated grassy square with one small airfield on it.

I make the terrain ok.  I place a field on it (smallrwy shape as a "Runway" object).  If I build that and load it into AH, I can launch planes, but of course it's weird as there are no hangers, tower, etc.

If I place a twr0 shape as a "Tower" object, a bmh0 shape as a "Hangar" object, a bmh0 as a "Bomb Hgr", a bmh0 as a "Ftr Hgr", and build it, load it in AH, it crashes AH upon loading.  Even if I just place a tower and build it, the resulting .res file crashes AH.  If I take everything away but the "Runway" object, it again at least doesn't crash AH upon load and I can fly in it.

What I'd like to do is figure out how to create one square of terrain with one "normal" small airfield on it.

Once I figure out how to do that, I'd like to figure out how to add a port and a CV group.

I did it once in a previous incarnation of the Terrain Editor, but can't manage it now in this one.

Any help will be much appreciated.

When I'm done, I'll write up a "Quick Start" guide on how to do these three simple things for people starting from scratch, like me.
