Learning the P-47
« on: May 16, 2007, 07:35:30 PM »
To those of you who fly the 47 as a fighter with success... which 47 is the best for learning how to use it properly?

For example, if someone posted the same question for F4U, I would say the F4U1A.  For 190s I think I would say 190A5 by a tiny margin compared to 190D9.  For 109s, that becomes difficult.  Such a huge gap from the F4, G2, G6 to the G14, K4.... I would probably recommend G2 to a noob, given it has decent speed and the guns are easier to use than the tater.

So, for a 47 noob like me.  Which one would be best to stick to for a while?
I hear 25 a lot.

Thanks,

Emu

D11 is most nimble, but moot point as you cant see anythin;  N is fastest by some 25 knots, but climbs poorly (even for a jug). Best all-round is prolly the D40, which all the 56th guys fly quite well. Best way I've found to get tons practice is either DA or some of the H2H rooms---ya can die every 45 seconds and it doesn't matter:aok  (Ya get lots more practice time per flight by not getting on the deck and slow)

Ask Major Biggles to help you.  I had completely despaired of ever flying the Thunderbolt competently until he showed me the struts.

I haven't flown them all that much but enough and I find the 25 to be my favorite although I've landed more kills in a single sortie in a 40.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

If you're planning to learn the 47, then you're planning to take some lumps in the early stages - no different from any other new plane, really.  Good on you!

My personal opinion is that the D25 is the hardest of the four to fly well, because it has the worst performance and the only benefit it offers is the bubble canopy (and a huge choice of ordnance, but that's not what you're after here).  I would go D11 -> D40 -> N -> D25, in that order.  All of the basics are wrapped up in the D11, and you will appreciate the performance increase that the D40 and N offer when you switch to those.  Going in the reverse direction won't get you accustomed to the 47's drawbacks quite so well.

Easiest to fly and fight with is probably the D40. Best overall performance, and good views are what a newbie needs. When you get the fighting style figured out, progress to the pure fighter among them - the D11.

The N is a slightly different beast.

I'd agree with Redtop if you have to fight hard, D25.

Anyone that tells you a D-11 is nimbler or more manuvarable can't handle a real jug, or/and they don't understand the weight diffrence... and what that means when.

All the jug's are good plane's, but not easy to deal with... even if you know what your doing.

P47's will force you to learn or die... but you need to understand what can make them such a great aircraft.  They have phenomenal engines, but with a huge amount of weight.  This creates a situation of being in full control of any combat in a dive. The dive is your friend... the p47 can slow down faster, accelerate faster and manuver almost better than anything while in a dive.

Slow down and accelerate is the key points.   If you can bait the con to dive with you, manuver out of a shot attempt, lose speed ... watch them as they overshoot... near about 90-50 degrees if your nose is 0 degrees... hit the throttle hard, WEP and turn back into them.... you should be turning back into them by 90 deg. or you'll be too late.....be solid... be smooth... and calmly take your shot.

This is a basic idea to let you know where the jug's greatests assets lay.... but it can do much more.... learning to push it to such limits isn't exactly easy though, and takes time....but good luck.

If you ever want a hand you can look up 56th folk, we are always willing to help out jug pilots... Also I agree on the Platano recomendation....I'd reccommend him highly as well, I might be able to help you some myself, but been very busy with RL stuff lately :)  only seem to get a couple of nights a week to play lately.

D-25 is the model I flew when I first started flying them.  It is a perfect mesh of what the jug has to offer!:aok

D11.....Take 100% and DT..climb to 25k.You sould have plenty of gas to wreap havok below you..Fly at first downward slashing attacks(classic Jug strat)..then eventually you turn into turnfighter mode. After that you put the nose down w WEP and u should have enough speed(faster than all p47s cept N) to land your kills.

Flown this way u dont notice the slightly lower climbrate.

Hats off to anyone who can see well enough out of a D11 to kill stuff and live...entire bombers in gun range disappear behind windshield struts---does  'Trackir' help in that area?

OK, the 47 is a magnifisent plane, it has high speed flaps, which are 1 of the biggest advantages, put 2 noch of flaps down on a turn and bam u can out turn a F4U, that is if u have atleast 250mph of speed or more

PS: Fly the P-47D-40, it has better sight in the cocpit
