Killshooter in the DA, which was needed thanks to the vulch dweebs, but also killed off the free for all dogfights. Those often turned into learning opportunities when the really good sticks who kept owning me would explain what I was doing wrong.
Two small corrections here.

IMO killshootter was not "needed" to provide relief from the "vulch dweebs". HiTech simply did not wish to hear any further requests to provide some type of modest assistance to alleviate 'some' of the more extreme bad behavior. Their response was a sledgehammer solution to a mosquito problem. They couldn't be bothered to, at the very least, add an MOTD similar to the TA (thus giving credence to people telling the dweebs they were doing wrong) as one solution that was asked for, so they punished the many to squelch EVERYONE!
They justified this with the lame excuse of saying the DA was never intended for the way it was being used, even though they knew of, and allowed, it to be used as it was for the previous 15 months (back to the time I joined AH) and most certainly longer before that.
That essentially killed the greater participation and usage of the DA by everyone.

While there was another base so designated for free-for-all in the DA, the initial spawning base (I believe it was A30) was generally used for friendly 'pick up' 1 v. 1 fights or "duels" where an engagement was first offered then accepted, followed by a standard duelling, neutral merge.
Again, IMO, 97% of the time everyone followed these unofficial "Rules Of Engagement" and taught them to newbs who would listen. This was generally a very well-ordered and polite arena, with only the occasional squeaker dweeb not playing nice. It only got squirrelly for 2-3 weeks after a new commercial-generated influx 2-week freebies, then it would settle down again.
As you previously alluded, this WAS a great place to seek out a more experienced pilot and ask (often by painful, but fun trial and error) for ACM tips and tactics. It WAS a very fun arena and WAS a very useful teaching environment (though HiTech will never admit it).
