HiRes Pack fubard me...skins?
« on: May 22, 2007, 10:39:14 PM »
Someone mentioned that I should shut preload skins off, which it is already so not sure what the issue is...

I downloaded and installed the hi-res pack.  Which was stupid as, I was already in hi-res mode.  After downloading it and installing it, I saw ZERO difference, which to me tells me everything was already set.  I had it downloaded before and was running it for a long time, but figured I better reinstall to make sure.

SO now I am getting JITTERS...which is VERY annoying.

My system isn't too bad, my video card is more than capable of handling the game but my processor may be lacking here..

Too many upgrade their video card to fix a myriad of woes.  When in fact the computer in a whole is the package that creates the graphics.

I have a 7600gt XXX XFX edition...not overclocked.
My processor is a 3200+ amd 64...single core.
2 gigs o ram, 2 sata drives running in raid for speed..

Pretty sure my weak point is my processor, but NOW I'm trying to figure out how to get back to where I was before I started this chaos :(

So, is it possible that this is a skins issue loading and my processor can't handle the power?  I haven't changed anything else.

Suggestions, thanks.

Without the hi-res installed, you were running at 512 texture size when you selected 1024. The 1024 files are just not there. It runs the next lowest.

When you installed the hi-res, it installed the 1024 files, which now show up in-game. Not everybody can tell the difference between 512 and 1024 texture size. However, the fact that you took a performance hit means you had not been using hi-res before.

To go back to how you had it before, select 512 texture size in the video options.

You will notice NO difference from what you had before the hi-res was installed because this is what AH was using regardless.

Kev made a post a couple of days ago discussing the large number of skins in the game now, and how it affects performance.  Can't remember the thread ID, but look in the general forums from over the weekend.  Discusses reducing the amount of custom skins in your cache to improve performance and reduce the stuttering.

Krusty,

I have a 7600 GT XFX XXX Edition (fastest 7600 on the market) reviewed here: http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/xfx_g-force_7600.php
In comparison to the recommendations for the AH2 1024
"...Generally speaking, you would need a very high end video card, such as an ATI X800Pro/XT or an NVidia 6800Ultra or better to be able to use 1024 textures effectively and only with anti-aliasing disabled as anti-aliasing can quadruple the amount of video ram needed for any given frame to be drawn....

My card in many respects kills these cards, in others - it's on par but mostly ranks higher.

You can compare the cards (keep in mind that the 7600gt listed here is slower than mine) here:
http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html?modelx=33&model1=716&model2=720&chart=279

Sooo I'm not sure what the problem is.

BTW - I did NO caching when I entered the game, and didn't change a thing with my settings. I would have cached if it wasn't already in 1024 prior to this correct? It was set to 1024 when I left to install it, 1024 when I checked after the stutter issues.  Usually it has to cache once when you change your textures right?
Well it didn't...BUT it did cache when I switched to 512.
512 is unacceptable and I can definitely see the difference. :(

Suggestions?  I'm preping to wipe the system soon because I want to do some new funky stuff with more drives (for hot swap/cold spare).

Like I said, no issues prior to installing the hi-res pack. I was only putting it in to ensure I had the latest and wasn't missing anything.  I wasn't but now am paying for tinkering. :(

Try defragging your HD.

Then try re caching your skins if the first option doesn't work.
Time's fun when you're having flies.

Sounds good kermie but how doth one recache em?  Just delete the folders (not near that comp now) such as textures or cache?

Yes, you set your texture size back to 512 (if you have not already) then delete the "cache" directory. It will go through the cache rebuilding process the next time you start the game up (so plan on waiting 4-5 minutes), and you're done.

Thanks guys, I'll give that a shot.  If that doesn't work, I'm going to go ahead with my clean wipe of the system and at that point will have to restart the game so to speak.  Just wasn't planning on it so soon....

If you are going to defrag it, defrag after deleting the cache directory, but before rebuilding it.

EDIT: Actually, I guess it doesn't matter, but I was thinking it'd take less time to defrag, and when the cache was re-written it would be sequential, but it would be sequential if you defragged it after building the cache anyways! Never mind.

yea assuming their cache system picks 'large chunks' o hard drive to place their structure.  I doubt they smarted it that much and it probably just puts it wherever the hard drive controller and drivers choose to put it.

I'm going to tinker a bit.  I used to play ww2online and had issues with that game while flying at times.  Bought this new system and still had some spikes, the lower the settings the worse they would get?  Then after years and years of giving them time to tweak their game, I finally gave up trying to fly in that game with any reliability.  I see people with FAR better systems than I complaining about worse issues.
It wasn't bad, just at that IMPORTANT moment as you were about to fire, the guy you had sixed would suddenly freeze then was gone. :(

Still the best ww2 simulation on the ground.  FUn fun fun.  I will from time to time go back and tinker, but will never fly with any seriousness for fun like I do in AH2. :)
