Slow Startup

The other day I was running Spy Sweeper and Trend Micro well I was being stupid and tryed to open a few other programs in the background which completely froze up my system.  The system was so locked I had to restart it by hitting the power button in front I waited 30 min for the computer to unfreeze but nada.  So since I did that when ever I start up my computer it goes VERY slow it will start up go into the normal start up screen you know hit tab for bios etc.  After that it goes to the windows start up you know has the windows icon and the loading bar etc. After this it goes to a black screen it will stay on the black screen for 15 to 40 secs(Never Happened Before) during this time the mouse light will go dead but the other lights on my joy stick and keyboard are still lit, till it proceeds to the user log in screen. then works fine from there. Suggestions?

I'm confused here.  You hit the power button on (to restart it) and it didn't power down and you waited 30 minutes and it still was frozen?  Did you like push the power button in and out or did you hold it down for 5 seconds?

Anyways, it sounds like either your Windows registry/boot commands could be damaged.  However, if that was the case you'd probably get some errors codes.

It may be hardware related.  Maybe a failing hard drive or some bad sectors on it.  First try defragging your HD, if no avail there, do a Disk Error Check.  There's a lot of other things we can try, but let's try this for starters.

Sorry I was typing this right before I had to go so I rushed it .  Once the computer had frozen up I waited for 30 min to see if it would un freeze it didn't so I held in the power button for 5 sec turning off the computer.

Put your WinXP disk in.  Boot off the CD.  Then go to the recovery console and log into your main HD.  Then type this at the c prompt,  chkdsk -r and hit enter.  Makesure the switch r is there.  It will try to repair any bad sectors on the HD.  It may take awhile for it to do this process.  I had 1 computer take over a hour to go through the drive to repair it.  Some only took 15 mins.
