Need Help Re:CPU Usage Problem
« on: May 24, 2007, 12:43:23 AM »
Ive recently read a few posts about using the Task manager and messing with processes,
Skuzzy advised that you want to make sure that AH is running 98/99%
if you alt-tab out while in the game and check it

Well im one of the guys who has it stuck on 48/50% area with the rest on "System Idle" area

Ive defragged,,,,Virus Checked (AVG) spyware cleaned (spybot) adware hunted (Ad-aware) and have tried to clean things up as much as possible
with such little knowledge of what i the heck i am doing

Skuzzy implicated that it must be somthing taking up the CPU time,

whats my next move to figure this out?

If you have a dual-core CPU, the Task Manager is a bit stupid about CPU usage.  50% is the highest it will show for any one process.

From your DXDiag:

"Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz (2 CPUs)"

2 CPUs = dual core

In this case, I think it's HyperThreading.  I don't think there was a 2.4 dual core P4.

And besides, less than 100% CPU utilization isn't always bad.  With vsync on, it can just mean that you are running "comfortably" at your monitor's refresh rate.

Da.  "Dual" P4s will have a "HT" on the CPU logo if you look close enough.  I have an HP laptop (nx9600) with one of those.  Still acts like a dual core machine, and both Linux and Windows will lie about CPU utilization.

Back when the vox-squeakers were diaper-poopers Microsoft had the testicular fortitude to announce that "100% CPU utilization indicates your server is running at peak efficiency with no wasted CPU cycles".  They were referring to a server that was doing...nothing.  TechNet.  Gotta love it.  Almost as much as you had to love Windows 2000 SP5.

The Hyper-threaded CPU's from Intel appear as dual-core.  There are two complete sets of registers just like a dual-core CPU.  But, much of hte internal silicon is shared between the two.

So it is, at best, a half-breed.  They do work pretty well for what they are.
