Computer question
« on: May 21, 2007, 10:47:34 AM »
Hi,

Wasn't sure where to post this. I'm logged in under my husband's name... both he and my son are very active with Aces High and he'd suggested that I should post here with a computer related question as needed. Maybe someone here has a solution...?

We have several computers all connected to the internet via a router (Wild Blue broadband). I'm running Windows XP on IE 7.
When I go to Internet Options > Security > Custom Level, the page is blank.
No settings are listed at all, so I can't see which ones are enabled vs disabled.

The other computers here each show their individual settings, so I wonder what I have done to cause this :huh

I even went into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services and re-enabled everything, just in case I'd disabled something necessary. Had fiddled with that awhile back, trying to narrow down the many things that were trying to run continuously on my little processor. Anyhow... dunno what to do next.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks :)
Carolynu

Thank you, Nilsen!

Thought I'd best uninstall IE 7 first, and the moment I did, internet options became visible again.

Will give it some thought before reinstalling. If IE 7 caused this particular problem, who knows what else it was doing, that I hadn't yet noticed. Maybe I'll stay with the older version.

Thanks again!
Carolyn

Before you reinstall it I would run a complete virus and spyware scan with either adaware se personal or spybot search and destroy. I've seen several instances where IE7 was installed and the system had spyware and it caused similar issues. Hope this helps.

you may want to try Firefox instead of IE.

I dont use IE myself as i prefer firefox and opera. There are still some sites and services out there that that for some reason needs IE so its still on the machine.

Another issue...?
Thank you to everyone!
Decided to stick with IE, at least for now, since that's the only browser I've ever used and it's so familiar.

I did go back and re-download IE 7 after uninstalling it, and everything is still okay with internet options, so looks like I got a clean install this time.

However, there's yet another mystery on this pc - something that began a couple weeks ago, out of the blue, and I have no idea what started it. Switching back to IE 6 did not clear it up, so I don't think it's related to that other deal.

When I click to open a webpage from my desktop, the window that opens is tiny... about 8" wide by 1 1/4" high.
When it first began, I hadn't changed any options or settings to cause this... it just suddenly started doin it. I have run Spybot Search and Destroy along with my anti-virus program and all is well there...

Any thoughts, please?

Thanks!

Carolyn

Sorry, I forgot to say -

When I open IE from the Start Menu, it is instantly maximized, full-sized...
so the trouble comes in only when opening a page from the desktop.
Never did this before, so I have no clue. Thanks again!

IE tends to keep the window size the same as it was last exited out of, whether that is set to Maximize or smaller.  Open up IE.  Set the size of the window to what you want it to be.  Go to the FILE under the toolbar, and use the EXIT function under FILE to close out IE.  Open up IE again.  It *should* open to the size you had exited it under.  (It should work this way too if you've Closed out the program in the too taskbar, but there may be something else wrong here).
If IE consistently opens in a small window, no matter how its closed out, I'd have to suspect a problem in the registry, not the settings, as it happens to you in IE6 and IE7.

I'm with some of the others though..... I use Firefox as a web browser and Mozilla Thunderbird for my email and usenet groups.  Much better in regards to my control over the security, and as IE is integral to the Operating System updates, which creates security problems (among other security breaches in the OS).   You can even d/l a skin to make Firefox and Thunderbird look a lot like IE for comfort.

You can always download and install firefox and not make it your default browser yet and see if you like it.
IE will still be there if you want it or in the unlikely event you decide you dont like Firefox.

Firefox and Opera seem fairly intuitive to me. I would think even the very casual user wouldn't have much trouble transitioning from IE. Neither one has that polished look that IE has but - big deal! Loaded pages look the same.
