Will this system run AH???
« on: May 25, 2007, 06:27:23 AM »
AMD Athlon AM2 Dual Core 6000 64 Bit Processor  (two 3 gigs)
2048MB DDR2 667MHz OCZ Dual Channel RAM
640GB(2 x 320GB) Serial ATA II Hard drive with 16MB Buffer
nVidia 8800GTX 768MB PCI-E Graphics
16x Dual Layer +R/-R/RW DVD burner
DVD Rom Drive
M2N32 SLI Deluxe **WiFi Edition** Nforce 590 Socket Motherboard
ADI Sonic 7.1 High Definition Audio With Optical SPDif
Wireless 54G and Gigabit LAN
Logitech Elite Media Keyboard & X7 Laser Mouse

Vista Home Premium

I'm considering buying this system, but have been a little put off by reports of problems with AH and AMD dual cores - do they just occur in XP? I've been reading the forums, and apparently there is an 'optimisation' patch for this chip, which seems a little strange. Would I need to install this, please? I've also heard that framerates can be limited to a certain extent on the 8800GTX card. Is this true? My head is spinning.....

Also, as I will be running Vista, I'm wondering whether my Microsoft Force Feedback 2 joystick will work.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Vista should see your joystick the same as XP currently does. That part really should be painless.

As to the dual core problems, the fix has been posted for some time. I really wouldn't let that throw me.

I would if I was doing it wipe the vista off and load XP Pro on however.
But thats just my opinion.

The real key to any new system is takeing the time to research.

The more you read, the more you absorb, the more you learn the better your able to judge whats apples and apples, and whats apples and mangos.

Take the time now to educate yourself. You'll thank yourself later.

I -think- Skuzzy said the AMD dual core patch had problems when used under Vista. I believe his advice was to run AH in compatibility mode for Win 98 or XP instead until AMD gets a new patch out.

Many thanks for the replies, guys. The AMD processor certainly looks powerful enough, but the fact that a patch has had to be released to improve game performance concerns me. Is anyone out there using this chip? I've been told it's the AMD X2 6000+ chip, just described a little differently.

I have a FX55 , 2 gig ram, x1950xtx ... it runs perfectly in bolth w2k /XP pro .

I beta tested Vista all the way to rc2 and had nothing but problems with vista.

For a dedicated Gamer system its best to stay with XP . or go dual boot if you have to run vista (seperate HD install or you get problems)

8800 is a powerhorse, to be sure, but it's got very problematic drivers, it seems. You might be better off getting a 7950x2 or a X1950 (ATI), as both are still very powerful cards but have better support

Here's a couple reviews ...

I'm seeing alot of mixed reviews too ... some say it kicks tail on the gf 8800... and in others it says it doesnt ... they dont make much sense at this time .

I honestly doubt at this stage in ATI's development they have ANYTHING that can whup the 8800's arse. It's been too soon for them to have totally redesigned a new card (like Nvidia did for the 8800 back when it came out)

EDIT: I read the review, it says the X29000 has 320 stream processing units... I guess they're trying to catch up to the 8800. I think it'll be competition, but I think we have to wait and see if it takes the lead.

If it's even close, the driver support alone could end up being the deciding factor!

Anyways, on to some real data.  Now this review just came out before the R600 ATI cards came out (however they update it at the beginning of every month).
http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/05/01/the_best_gaming_video_cards_for_the_money/

And here's a graphical chart of a very large base of more modern Graphics cards.  Again not update for the new ATI cards.
http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics.html

From the early reviews of the 8800s vs the R600s, the 8800s faired somewhat well and the R600 did prove stronger in some games.  Nowadays depending on who develops the game ATI or Nvidia may fair better due to the developers signing with one of the card companies and utilizes code that their brand uses, thus to get better FPS etc.  Examples are Battlefield 2 etc etc.

The R600 cards may be suffering from early driver problems so they may benchmark higher in the end.  The 8800 drivers have become pretty rock solid as of now and I can speak for that first hand, on multiple machines.
