i rented it over the weekend. a really good movie. it's in subtitles, but you hardly notice. there is not all that much talking anyway, its almost all imagery. it takes place in the Yucatan, Mexico, just before European explorers arrive.
you can notice right away that, visually, this movie is not what you are used to seeing. the colors seem more vivid and really pop out. it was shot with the Genesis 12.5 megapixel digital movie camera... Mel Gibson made good use of it. he might not like Jews, but the guy knows what looks good on camera.
the jungle is gorgeous. the Mayans and their artifacts, tattoos, scarification and so on looks real, and he used genuine indians and mayans - no Tom Cruise here. the story line is simple, has some humor and some tender human moments, but its mostly riveting action - and the bloodletting just never stops. there are only a couple of fakey looking or improbable moments. overall, it is brutally realistic. i recommend it. you can't mistake this movie for a chick flick or a family movie, although i think it is made by Disney.
